mailchimp is free to start and has most of the same features.

GetResponse is 30 days free, you can start building your opt-in list with them and see how it goes and if it worth it.

I don't think you will ever get a better deal than benchmarkemail.
Free plan has everything as good as premium one, but you can't import your own list, and the emails will have their logo.
    But its really really good!

Sorry, but this is being penny wise and pound foolish as the old saying goes. These free alternatives will mark your e-mails as being amateur hour garbage and you'll find it harder to make conversions. Moreover, if and when you get to the point where you do have need for a real autoresponder, you'll find that it's that much harder to make the switch.

If you really are hard up for cash, consider a cheaper alternative such as Imnica mail, but don't go for a freebie. That's a perfect way to end up in the "IM doesn't work and I quit" crowd.

The other thing to note is that freebie services like mailchimp are very quick to ban accounts if they receive too many complaints or if they see them as overly spammy or promotional.

+1 for mailchimp for a start and if you grow a big list you can always go pro with them.
