I apologize if this should be in the BHW Loungee, but I wanted those of us dealing with SEO to read this.

I saw this article
Code:
http://www.adotas.com/2009/10/internet-publishing-veteran-flays-seo-industry/
in an online industry rag I get.

It mentions this post
Code:
http://powazek.com/posts/2090
by a long-outdated 'expert' who seems to be resorting to an end-stage career move which is the equivalent of 'You kids get out of my yard, or I'll turn the hose on ya!!".

It's hilarious. The comments are even more hilarious, especially the boot-lickers (Oh, Mr. Powazek, you're so SMART!xoxoxo) See if you can find mine there...

I hope every business online reads this, and IMMEDIATELY STOP THEIR SEO EFFORTS. :D

That might cut into my offline seo money, but since I'd be #1-#10 on the first page of Google, I wouldn't care!

Ok, back to work on my useless backlink building and comment spamming.

Powazek is right - that is, if you want to wait 14 years before you make your first dollar.

Content is linkspam's bitch slave.

If you really need to look at SEO manipulation from a moral standpoint, it's akin to a commercial on television. They're targetting you based on your interests (keywords) and are delivering a solution to a problem (even with your SEO manipulated website).

So, what's the problem? People are going to spend money on something they see at the local corner store if they believe it will fix their problem. Same thing goes here, so long as you do solve the person's problem either way, you're int he clear karma-wise.

As far as basically screwing Search Engines in the long run, he's 100% right, provided that Search Engine algorithms remain constant. The truth is that they will change to accomodate market flooding.

IMHO, search engines (I call them Google for short) change their algorithm to enhance their own paid ad products which ultimately increases their revenue - which is their only reason to exist (they're not a public service).

The idea that they want to 'get the most relevant information' to the searcher became ludicrous when web pages reached more than a few hundred thousand. Now they're in the hundreds of billions of pages. You think there is an algorithm that will determine what a 'searcher wants'?

Hell, even the searcher doesn't know what he wants...that's why he's searching!! :D

I have a hard time understanding, and placing, but I tend to agree with robert on this one, for the most part.

search engines will hand sculpt for major markets, but for newbie markets they have algorithms.. and domain name is king... as far as my knowledge goes.
