For a long term (1 year +) niche site with low / medium competition:

Is it a good / bad idea to buy a few foundational links that aren't from niche related sites, but have high quality metrics? I'm thinking about placing just a few as my first links for an initial boost, then building clean web 2.0 links myself slowly after.

Is this risky? I have no idea how strict Google is when it comes to links.

    Thanks

Take a look at the backlink profile of big authority sites.

They have backlinks from all over the place and not all from niche relevant sites.

Yep, but I was just wondering if on a smaller newer site this would raise red flags as being initial links. Think i'll give it a try.

For very new site, i would not advice that... When you gain some solidity, feel free.
