About 6 months ago I bought a done for you website from a service. I was fairly new to all of his great knowledge shared here on BHW and didn't know how to check the domain (and the importance of it). So I just relied on the provider of the website and went ahead.
Now 6 months later and after reading countless threads here, I found out that the backlink profile of the site is really bad. A lot of spammy sites have backlinks to my site and I have a lot of backlinks coming from only few sites.
I have however invested in writing and buying articles for this site and have had no problems for getting them indexed and some of them even ranking.
Coming to my question, now I found out about this, should I keep investing in the site? Is there any way to get rid of the very bad backlink profile? Or just I just forget about it and go ahead? Or quit?

    Thanks!

If it's really causing you problems, disavow them.

Are you sure your website is actually being hurt by those backlinks?

You can always disavow the links via WMT but it might not even be necessary.

You say indexing new pages isn't an issue that's a good sign.

    How's your actual rankings?

Quickest way to confirm is to check if the root is ranking for very easy keywords like brand name or the whole title.

Google won't let you to show up on the first 3 pages even for these easy keywords if you have a penalty.

Then there is to check if your inner page performs fine as well.

    So my suggestion is:

Definitely not quit. Ignore. Consider disavow if some real trouble shows up.

Thanks, just tried that. I am ranking first for the very trivial keywords of my website you mentioned (like title of my site for instance). All my inner pages with decent pages rank also (positions 25-40) for very low competition keywords. They are still relativly new, so that is all pretty normal I guess.

That is why I kind of know I am not penalized, I am just a bit afraid I could be penalized in the future for the bad links. My strategy will be:
    1) hope it doesn't happen
    2) if it happens, dissavow the bad links

For the piece of mind... check the WMT for manual penalties, it's under Search Traffic.

For any serious algorithmic penalties use this search parameter:

    domain tld

    Example:
    domain com

    https://www.google.com/search?q=domain+com

You replace . (dot) with (space).

Here are potential outcomes of this search:

    1. Exact domain name doesn't show up on first 3 pages = serious penalty

    2. Exact domain name shows up on first 3 pages = OK

    3. Inner page appears on the first 3 pages instead of root = trouble but might not be SEO related can be hosting

    Thanks @tiiberius !

    Here is the outcome:
    - No manual actions it says on Google Search console --> which is great!
    - Exact domain search:Home page shows up #1 + the whole page 1 in the SERP are post from my site + first half of second page results are also posts from my site

I guess I can be pretty pleased on the outcomes :)

Lot of back links from few sites. May look unnatural to the eyes of Google.

Yeah, with the help of webmaster tool you can disavow the bad links. This action should be done only at the time of receiving warning message or negative impact in the SERP. Otherwise, you don't care about that keep adding contents & building links.

Of course you don't have a manual penalty if you are indexed and ranking for some keywords on 4th page. If you had, well... you wouldn't.

Also, if you are ranking without any issues, don't touch what doesn't hurt you. If it's still okay, I would avoid the disavow tool, but that's up to you. You may have some spammy backlinks, but you are not penalized and ranking fine, so I would just leave it as it is.

That's great news indeed. No way in hell you have a penalty with that outcome.

So, feel free to ignore those links and just build new HQ money pages on your site and HQ links to them.

Thanks to you all for your advise. I will just keep going with the site and only use the disavow tool if I should get warnings from Google.

My view is don't touch anything. Because if you are ranking after six months it usually means its OK. The problem is if you disavow those spammy links it might end up hurting you.
