Ok judging by this question , you will not be able to make a successful forum most likely, I'd rather focus on something different such as making your own blog, landing page (for CPA etc) to make money.

Forums are super hard to get members to, every niche has more than 1 big forum, so unless you have something super big and good to offer your members from those other forums who have a ton of members, then it's going to be very hard.
I know people who have spend $x,xxx on forums and still got very little members, and failed. It's not esay to run a forum, I know many people want to own forums as it's exciting, it is, but it is NOT EASY to get members to.

    Just my piece of advice.

Building a new forum site is not as easy as it may seem. You will need to hire people to make your forum seem active so an investment is needed. Also, as you just said it yourself, SEO is required to make your forum visible to others.

But as there are so many forums for every niche nowadays it would be very hard to make a successful forum. I would not recommend you to start there.

Starting a forum is easy; getting interacting visitors is incredibly hard...

Getting to the critical-mass point where it spawns continual chatter/posts is a herculean task. If I were you, I'd concentrate an any one of a million other IM ideas.

Respect for not just following the other posts above by saying negative things, you see it a lot on here. If someone advises something and it may/may not have been the correct answer. The other forum posters tend to follow suit giving same style of answers.

Like you said, i think he should do it if he thinks its worth it, only he knows what niche etc. etc. he is in and how to work his way.

    Thnx
