I foolishly set out last year to start a forum. Bought my domain and all before I realized my competition was trying to rank for almost the same keywords. So now I'm in a deathmatch with another forum for the same keyword.

    Things I have done.
    -Massive Scrapebox Work
-Scraped the top 100 results for the keyword I wanted ranked for, checked their back links and attempted to add my link to them all.

    -Articles
-Hand spun/written about 20 articles and posted on sites such as enzine articles.

    -Followed Several threads here.

    -/blackhat-seo/link-building/233405-get-pr5-pr6-pr7-pr8-pr9-profile-backlinks.html

    Progress so far
Was on page 8 for my keyword now I'm on page 2.

Any suggestions on what I could do next?

Before you spend any more time and money...how are you going to monetize your forum?
From own experience, the adsense CTR is very low and...you using CPA or paid membership perhaps?

If you have a solid system proven to make money, I would suggest creating a twitter feed that tweets everytime a new post is made on your forum... then take your twitter rss and do a rss submission (just google for such a service)

You should get decent visitors and backlinks/exposure this way...

Also, have you had someone check out your onsite seo?
    If that is on par...

You can use forum generator to populate your forum with threads etc related to your keywords...keyword rich threads that get tweeted and found by rss directories should make a good difference...

    Good luck

Once my forum grows I plan to implement paid membership and rent the banner space. I might also run some clickbank products through it.

The twitter is a great idea and I think I'm going to to find that now.

And I have had no-one check out my onsite SEO, I refuse to pay 200$ for some yahoo to tell me junk.

well the main thing is to make sure your URLs are good...titles,categories etc all mentioned in the url...

This will help with indexing and ranking

Yea I have a plugin that adds the thread title to the url.

    So
    -/forumdisplay.php?fid=120
    Becomes
    -/title-of-thread
