I'd like to hear the ups, downs, obstacles, and in general what happened with your experience. Where do most people mess up?

I know the biggest thing is getting traffic to the site, buyers and sellers.

I started a classifieds site way back ~2004, before I got into IM as I am now.

It's a catch 22 - you need the listings to keep the visitors (assuming you get the visitors), but you need the visitors to create the listings.

It was possibly one of my worst businesses ever - but that was because of my own naievity and terrible execution rather than anything else.

I suppose if you scraped the content from elsewhere, you might retain traffic on your site for a while, but it would quite soon be clear that it was content scraped from another site (eg, all these forums that copy BHW content - nobody uses them, they come to BHW instead).
