OK, here's the deal. I'm a newbie. I admit I know virtually nothing about proxies and settings and configurations, but I know enough that I want my privacy. I have used Tor and it's so slow, it's useless. I have paid for HMA only because it was during the Olympics and at the time I just wanted to watch the BBC coverage because NBC is ridiculous. That served its purpose and now I'm looking for something more private, but that works similarly. I don't have time to go through all the free proxies online just to surf anonymously and I have no clue what anyone is talking about when it comes to buying private proxies and setting up lists and leeching and whatever. I would have no idea what to do with a private proxy offered by individuals on this site and I don't even understand what that means.

The bottom line is that I want to hide my IP address and browse anonymously and I want it to be as easy as regular browsing. I don't want to have to configure something every single time I go online. I don't mind paying, but I want to be sure it's legitimate and works well enough. All I am asking is for someone to recommend software that can do it all for me and that works well enough for the average person who is not trying to utilize search engine optimizations or adwords or anything like that.

I am just so friggin sick of being tracked and having all my data and usage compiled and used by private companies for whatever reasons. It's invasive and I don't want my internet usage tracked to me personally. When I am in my house, I expect what I do to be private and the fact that companies I have never interacted with or know about know specific details about what I do online makes me furious and I am fed up.

So, can anyone, please just tell me the best software out there that will simply give me back my privacy and peace of mind?! As I said, I'm not a tech person and I am not someone using SEO or adwords so any of the commercial software out there should be fine for my purposes, right? I know this question has been asked before but as I said, I don't have any clue what you are talking about when it comes to purchasing private proxies and all the other stuff.

Also, Idk if this is relevant, but I already use ghostery to block some tracking.

There are several really good proxy softwares discussed in depth within the forum, specifically meant for SEO and other more-or-less grey/black hat uses. The search function makes miracles to find them.

But for the concerns discussed here, I'd consider a psychiatrist.
Excessive paranoia is fortunately curable nowadays.

You can but a couple of private proxies for $5 a month.....and 2 minutes of looking around will show you how to set up a private proxy in firefox/explorer etc. If you are that worried maybe dont do anymore subreddits.

Thanks, genius. I said I was not looking for SEO or grey/black hat uses.

And have you ever ordered your own report(s) from LexisNexis or Choicepoint? That's not paranoia. It's called being an aware consumer.

And for the other poster, you don't post a subreddit. A subreddit is just a category. I couldn't care less about individuals searching me or my user names. If I want to hide my activity or my identity, I know how to do that. That is not my concern. My concern is the companies like iBehavior and Targus that track me, my online activity, my purchases, my addresses, my email addresses and then share that data with other companies. I want a separation between myself- the actual person and my online presence and activity so that nothing is connected, and the only way I can think to do that is by hiding or changing my ip address

Just keep in mind that a proxy will usually only hide your web traffic and any other programs will still use your real IP. a VPN like the HMA VPN would let all your programs use the IP thats assigned to you. So depending on what your needs are the VPN may be a better way to go.

And if your really concerned about being tracked you might want to use a program like CCleaner to remove cookies, etc that might be stored on your computer that can be used to track your activities. Even if you change your IP its not going to do much good if you have a cookie that storing your identity, history, etc.

You can easily block some cookies from getting entry on your PC, you can also block sites from installing any add-ons, and you can block IP addresses and sites from tracking. Easy for any 'noob' through just the web browser (Firefox, for example).

Mix the ways you browse ecom and shopping sites. Do some high-end (window) shopping if you are interested in low-cost items. On eBay, if you want to see the camera section, give a longing look at the clothes and shoes section too. Go all round and keep them busy guessing. :)

Also use anti-malware and anti-adware software along with your normal antivirus and firewall, and clean your PC regularly and thoroughly.

Seems like sufficient protection for a 'noob'.

    re.:
    Proxy software:

All those HMA types and the anonym.to types give you some protection, but they still can't stop the sites from installing cookies and adwares, and other stealth data-gathering programs on your PC.

Too bad the same can't be said for severe retardation.

It's a waste of time to even talk to the retarded, much less try to teach them anything.

Here's something for you to think about:
    https://panopticlick.eff.org/

Doesn't matter what your IP might be, if someone wanted to ID you, they could probably get pretty close by browser fingerprinting. They aren't going to be able to "track" you, but for example if some government agency wanted to find out if you've been to site "X", this would probably stand-up in court.

HMA would be my last choice because based on the research that I have done, they are the ones that are most likely to hand over your identifying information and browsing history to just about anyone, and for any reason.

FWIW, my basic advice is to rethink your premise which is that good browsing privacy is something that should be both easy and free, which is and will always be fundamentally wrong, for the simple reason that we are vastly outnumbered by masses of drooling retards that have no problem with having their every utterance recorded, their movements, where they've been, what they've seen etc... and they view with suspicion anyone that does not share their retarded perspective. As has been so conveniently illustrated here.

You don't want a proxy, you want a VPN. Which is essentially a proxy for your whole system. This is the second time today I advise someone on VPNs... I use these guys, http://privateinternetaccess.com/ . They keep no logs, and you can buy them with bitcoins. 100% anonymous.
