Did yours update today? Mine was on a steady decline. Falling 100k everyday when I reached under a million a week ago, but then it didn't even update. I have some others I pay attention to in my niche and there's didn't update either. Did Alexa take the day off?

    DisguiseMarketing,

Since Alexa is dependent on a user controlled environment, there could be a lot of reasons why these numbers aren't updating. I would be careful how much emphasis you place on the Alexa ranking in general. There is a lot of evidence on the web that they don't promote accurate numbers even when they are updated. The fact that a user must have the toolbar installed on a browser in order to generate data is a red flag.

Alexa's own website has this disclaimer on it, "The traffic data are based on the set of toolbars that use Alexa data, which may not be a representative sample of the global Internet population. To the extent that our sample of users differs from the set of all Internet users, our traffic estimates may over- or under-estimate the actual traffic to any particular site."

They go on to say that "Alexa's data comes from a large sample of several million Alexa Toolbar users..." As recently as this year it is estimated that there are nearly 2.1 billion global internet users. Even if Alexa's data was gleaned from 10 million users, that's only half a percent of total internet users; and not a representative sample.

Here is the page that contains the language above,

Also, check out this post on SEOMoz about the inaccuracies of data from some companies including Alexa,

Thanks for the detailed info bro. I know about all of this. But there are people who actually do make money from their Alexa ranking. Yes, once you become a webmaster the veil is lifted, but people still use it as a metric when they determine how much they are going to pay you, or if they are going to guest post on your site.
