For new sites, would you not recommend EMDs as a rule now?

Lots of us have older EMDs have have disappeared out of the SERPs.

Did the algorithm update only penalize previously-existing EMDs, or would new EMDs (for example, one registered today) still be subject to the same penalty?

Still too new to know... I guess the EMD rule will affect old and new sites, but we will just have to wait and see...

Why does everybody think it was EMDs they punished? I still see some EMDs ranking perfectly fine. They punished crappy EMD with only 2-3 pages of content that was purely made for 1 keyword.

If you just build a quality site on a EMD you will be fine.

Exactly. Most of my EMDs ranked better after the update than they did before.

I know this is BHW but the writing on the wall is pretty clear that quality needs to go up. Sure, you can still rank spam or with spam but it's getting increasingly difficult. But just because Google penalized EMDs of low quality it does not then follow that all EMDs are bad.

Idk, my own site survived the EMD update and it was pretty new. Only had something like 15 pages of content at the time and some minor back-linking done. Not really sure as to why I survived actually.

The EMD update targeted low-quality EMDs. EMDs still have an anchor text allowance bonus and still can be ranked easier for its terms but that has been lowered compared to before. Still, it's easier to rank compared to brand names.

Any website be it an EMD or not can be ranked without problems if you know what you are doing. I say go with non EMD to avoid any additional problems.

+1 for that. Even if the update doesn't hit you today, why leave it and look over your shoulder with every next update when they adjust their algo a bit?

there is no difference, if you have good quality content and a variety of keywords you shouldn't be penalized.

    I recommend to:
    1. Stop listening to morons who like to recommend stuff but don't know s#it
    2. Learn why your EMDs dropped and adapt your SEO. And don't tell me they were whiter than Snow White because I know you had a shitload of poor links all with exact or similar keywords and mostly to homepage. Maybe even the EMDs had only a few pages of content.

My main EMD that was penalized had great content. It's a site I've been building myself for 3 years full of handwritten content that I wrote myself. The niche is one of my hobbies and I can write about it better than just about anyone on the internet.

There were no spammy backlinks. No automated bullshit. No blog comments, no forum profile links, none of that shit. Just legit backlinks from other authority sites (which are still on page 1), including Livestrong, who ranks for everything now and is the new expertvilliage.

Literally the only strike against my site is a hyphenated EMD.

I think big G is just balancing the power of the EMD,not punishing these sites.

Sorry to hear that.... this EMD penalty really sucks.
Although most of the EMD hit could have had low quality, there are also some other legit sites that were hit with no reason other than EMD. At the same time, some EMd were not hit, and still show good ranking. Its difficult at this stage to say exactly what makes the difference in google eyes.

Build a real site instead of a spammy piece of shit website and you'll have nothing to worry about.

As long as it is not a spammy site it is still worth it that EMD update didn't do any damage to any of my EMD's.

It only effected EMD's with low quality content and low quality links. It's not the EMD's in particular that were effected it's just a majority of EMD site owners used them to build sites that would monetize through AdSense and then have low quality content and often times would ranker higher than authoritative sites and since Google wants its users to be paired with quality content, they did an EMD update which effected only the sites that used Spam links to rank higher and sites that had content that wasn't well written. So, if you want to protect your ranking before you lose it or get back the ranking you already lost, than you need to rewrite the content on your site and work on building higher quality links to your site.
