Let's say you're doing it more white/gray hat, I.E. no PBN's and only 200-300 dollar links from real/big websites vs. Spending money on targeted and controlled AdWords which do you think would be more profitable after 3 months?

That depends on which you're better at. It also depends on WHAT you're selling. You want the profit margin and sales price of the item to leave you enough to advertise a good amount of dollars on per conversion and still turn a solid profit.

For PPC some niches are very expensive and crowded to buy ads on. So it depends on your niche as well.

Also consider PPC isn't just plain old Adwords, there is Adwords Display Network, Google Shopping, as well as Bing Ads (and shopping I believe).

Just know this... it will take more than 3 months to get your PPC campaign highly refined to the point where you're really efficient.

I gotta say it does seem crazy expensive running ads. I'd be curious to know what has better ROI and click through in regards to organic vs ads. I.E. what gets more clicks the top 3 ads or top 3 organic results in ecommerce?

I'm always trying to improve SEO regardless but budget wise it can make a significant difference in regards to focusing budget on ads or SEO.
