    Hello BHW,

Quite curious but on some WP templates (esp. the free ones) I see some links going back to the developer, e.g. "Template made by so an so" with a link to the developer's homepage.

Does this help actually help with SEO for the developer making those templates or is it detrimental? Is this a sound back link tactic? This technique is probably ancient but really curious if this has any effect at all.

In most cases, I believe the creator of such free templates is trying to get credit for his/her work but now I'm thinking it's just another way to get and build backlinks.

    Thanks for reading!

It's good to give credit where credit is due. If you want a Wordpress theme created go to fiver -- tdcaron (I think that's his username) offers this service.

It is a way to get free backlinks, some template creators will even insert links and hide with CSS and surround with <h1> tags etc. in an attempt to give more authority. Recently footer links were devalued in an update, I'm not 100% sure but I believe WPMU or some Wordpress company was penalized under Penguin for excessive anchor text because all of their themes were anchor-text rich and automatically placed in the footer.

Thanks for the input! Yeah I also heard that footers don't really count as much. I guess they've been used and abused.

Don't think they count for much. In fact I remember reading some people felt they'd been penalized for it
