Not illegal where I live. Think that's just in the US. Surely not just the gov't benefits from it as you don't need a stamp to post it into someone's mailbox.

I had been wondering about that too... but the gov makes no money from email, and they do from postage... that is an acceptable hypothesis.

Well, spamming costs the email providers money in bandwidth and storage, so they probably paid off some people to make it illegal with insane penalties...kinda like pirating music.

With junk mail, everybody but the consumer makes money, which is exactly why it will always be legal.

    That's my theory, anyways

yea man, every damn day I get a chunk of paper in the mail box.

They Let that be legal yet it wastes allot of paper and it contributes to pollution.

email spam is illegal but there's no paper waste.

    makes sense? not to me.

junk mail accounts for over 35% of the post office's revenue.

that's why they allow it. They are losing money with email/800# payments/online payments.

I know this because a friend who is pretty high up in the postal service told me about it.

Looking at it from the '35% of USPS revenue' point of view, if it wasn't for the junk mail, the cost of sending and receiving your real mail would be about 50% higher.

It's a federal offense to put anything in a mailbox that does not have postage on it.
