I am doing manual following and have tried following people on the web browser on my desktop but I find that using my phone and official instagram app I can follow people with a much better success rate. About 20% to maybe 35%. Also I found I could follow/unfollow more users per day.

    Anybody else notice this?

Also is there a program where I can have it follow people with certain words in their name? That would be the only automation I would ever want on this account.

Didn't notice. In theory there shouldn't be any difference. Maybe there could be some differences in viewing/order but not in overall results. Do more research/tests. If it happens again keep us informed.
I haven't seen software with such a feature, but I guess it's easily manageable. Just look for someone on the forum to code it for you.

I think Instagram may simply favor mobile users on the official app as Instagram in general is intended to be used on mobile. Just a guess.
