I have been reading a lot of journals and follow me threads on BHW lately and it has inspired me to create my own. My goals with this thread is to help keep me inspired to move forward with my goal of getting rich using the internet. And, if it works I think it would be great for others to learn from my business strategies as well - to show it is possible.

This first post will be rather long as I want to give everyone my history and previous attempts to make money and how it has turned out. This can help you understand what I have gone through and what has or has not worked for me.

    My History

About two or three years ago I decided that I wanted to get rich using the internet. I had followed the Thirty Day Challenege a while before that and it really inspired me to move forward.

So, I found a niche I was interested in and started a wordpress blog. My method was to find how-to articles from other websites that I could copy and paste onto my site. I also added a link back to the original author's site as the source in case they ever came knocking on my door for posting their article. I then went through the article and changed some of the text to re-optimize the article for a particular target keyword. I would add the keyword in all meta tags, in an h2 or h3 tag, and stuff it to about 3-4%.

At that time I was only using Google's Keyword Tool to find keywords. I'd look for keywords related to my niche with high searches and then go to Google itself and type the word in using quotes. This provides exact match results. I'd target keywords with less than 150,000 exact match results.

The blog itself was and still is two column with a right sidebar. On it I placed Google Adsense in two positions - the right sidebar and after the article.

I also searched online for existing product review articles. I would copy those articles and paste them on my site too and link to my amazon affiliate account.

My income model was to make money off of Adsense clicks and Amazon Affiliate links from the product reviews section.

For about a year things were going ok. I started getting some traffic and making about one dollar or less per day. But, things never jumped. I was posting new articles randomly whenever I felt the need. I had no system in place.

Around October of 2011 I decided to get serious about my site, internet marketing and getting rich. So, I started to more research and found that Google hates duplicate content. That is why I was not getting much traffic or making much money from my site. Not many pages were getting indexed because they were essentially duplicates with a few words changed here and there.

So, I decided that if I was going to be serious about this than I would have to write original articles. But, I wasn't an expert in my niche. So how could I do that? My solution was to find keywords using the methods I mentioned above and then search for those keywords to find relevant articles. I would then use that article as inspiration to write an original article. That way I didn't have to be an expert on the subject. I could fake it. All I cared about was getting people to the site to click on links to make me money!

After I started writing my own articles things started to get better. The traffic to my site started increasing and with it Adsense revenue and Amazon revenue started growing. Between October and December of 2011 my adsense started to see some $8-9 dollar days. Around Christmas I made about $150 in amazon revenue. It was great! By just writing original articles and keyword stuffing them I was getting results!

I was still posting articles randomly. Maybe two in one week and none in another.

After starting to make some real money from my site I started thinking that I should probably get serious about this. I figured if I could make $5-8 dollar days doing in haphazardly just imagine what I could make if I started mapping out a business plan.

So, in December 2011 I found and read a book called Launch by Michael Stelzner that changed my mindset completely on internet marketing. I felt like this book was written just for me. It outlined a smart strategy to building an internet business in ways I never thought of before. If you have not read it I highly recommend it! Everything I am doing from this point forward online is in response to the teaching in that book. And, things I am learning on BHW.

    My Goal

This journal will be a log of everything I do moving forward to create a succesfull business online. At first, I just wanted to make a quick buck or two online but after a year of experience and knowledge I have changed my mindset to actually creating a real business. One that will last for many years. A business that dominates a niche and is the leader in its field.

Some Things That Have Worked For Me

Throughout the years I have done some things that have produced good results that I'd like to share.

    • On my blog I added a 468x90 google adsense banner ad below my article title and before the first paragraph of text. This jumped my earnings by 50%. This continues to be my highest clicked ad and shows a small change can make a big difference.
    • I added a popup box when all visitors come to my site that says "Subscribe and Get Free Stuff. Join over 16,582 other people and subscribe to our free email list. We'll send you weekly updates and give you a heads on our free giveaways." with an email subscribe button. This took my monthly subscribers from about 20 to over 200-300. I think the fake high number makes people think it is popular and is easier to convert to subscribers.
    • I started adding articles on a weekly schedule. My goal is to do two per week. To help with this I reinvest my money into an article writer who writes articles for me for $10 a piece. I found my writer through CG. All articles are original. This has also helped because with regular content I got picked up by another blog that posts links to my site. This other site is highly visited and sometimes I get a majority of my traffic from that site and can boost it by a couple hundred visits per day.
    • Throughout some articles I add a link to an amazon affiliate product. I link the text of something that is talked about. This has seemed to help. Although I have ideas to improve this.
    • I started a facebook page and twitter account. I bought Fiverr gigs to give me fake followers to make it look popular. At first I did not get many followers but now using the fake likes it has helped me get a few new likes per day as my facebook and twitter accounts now look popular.
    • I created a few informational products related to my niche and sell them on my website. I only get about 2-3 sales from it each month. Even though I have a sidebar graphic that says "Free Download Samples" where they can sample the product before getting the full thing. I don't get many converts or clicks through it though. I do also put them on eBay and sell about one each for each week.

    Some Things That Backfired

I got hit by the Google Penguin update pretty hard. It knocked my traffic in half. I think it is because I was keyword stuffing my articles with 3-5% and a few months ago I purchased a few Fiverr gigs (one web 2.0 link wheel and the other crappy forum backlinks.)

Now I am going back through my articles to reduce the keyword density. Which I hope will help get these pages ranked again. Not sure how to fix the crappy backlinks.

From this point forward my on-page SEO strategy is this: I only add the keyword in the title, meta tags, once in the first paragraph, once in last paragraph, as an Alt tag to a photo embeded in article and sometimes as a link title if i can link out to wikipedia or some other source and use it.

    ----------------------------------------------------

I will keep this thread updated with the different things I am doing and the affects I think they are having.

    Thanks for following me!

No offense to the OP, but if I see another one of these "follow my journey" threads I'm going to put a bullet in my head.

I understand that people post these things as a "public accountability" anti-procrastination tactic, but they almost always peter out within a few days. I can't say that I've seen one post that went from "follow me as I get rich" and actually ended up with the guy making a reasonable amount of money.

Do you know who gets rich on the Internet? People who get their ass to work and actually do something. Writing long-winded posts on forums is not a productive use of your time.

Note to mods: I'd like to see a new forum section where these kinds of posts can be corralled together. Maybe you can charge $5 for each new thread. Whenever someone actually reaches their stated goal, they get all of the money in the kitty as a bonus.

I actually didn't finish writing my original post. I had to leave. I will update it. For those of you who hate journey's I know what you mean... people flake out of them AND lots don't really give a detailed explanation of what they are doing.

My journey will be different. I am going to tell you exactly what I am doing each step of the way.

Also, I will be using mostly White Hat and some Grey Hat tactics. I am building a real business that one day I can look back and show people how I did it without having to hide my tactics.

I think this will be a great journey for those interested in making a career through internet marketing and online businesses.

Hey man, I am starting my journey as well. Are you using free blog this time? What is your plan this time, for niche selection, physical product/information product/CPA ? You are right about writing your own article, I am doing the same, and lets see how things go on. Good luck for your journey.

Well, I find your story very interesting OP, and it looks like my own story for some part:

I managed to build an authority site on a given niche, without knowing much on this niche, but it was a niche I was passionate about (and this is, I think, one of the keys to a succeeding website). I wrote my articles by documenting myself a lot, asking myself questions people could ask and searching for answers on the internet. I would read forums about a topic, and then write an article containing all the answers I found.

By the way, I hope you will succeed :)

    Strategies I am Employing Now

After the Pengin update knocked my site down I've started to give up on trying to manipulate G to rank my site high. It just seems too hard to do and who knows when the next update will occur and I might get slapped again for bad SEO tactics.

    SEO

So, I've decide to go another route.

I use Market Samurai as my keyword research tool. It is great! Check it out if you have not yet.
With MS I am now looking for long tail keywords without a lot of traffic. My idea is this: If I can rank for a ton of low hanging fruit keywords, eventually they will add up to lots of traffic. Trying to compete for high traffic keywords just doesn't seem worth it to me right now since I got slapped by Google Penguin.

This is how I filter MS to find keywords. If you don't know what these mean, go find a tutorial on YT that explains it.

First I find related keywords for my niche to write articles on. Then I filter the Keyword Analysis as such:

    Total Searches: 50
    PBR: 40%
SEOTC: blank - but I want to see it
    SEOTCR: 2%

    Match Type: Exact
    Period: Monthly

This helps me find good keywords that receive at least 50 searches per month and is a good match.

I then use the SEO Competition module to find out which keywords have little competition. I only care about:

    DA
    PR
    BLP
    BLD
    All On Page options

If the keyword has mostly red for DA and PR I forget about trying to write an article for it. My site is only DA of 2 and PR 3 which is not that high.

What I look for is keywords with
DA that lists some blanks and low ages. A
A scattering of 0 PR or low 1-2
Low BLP with some 0 in there
Having mostly green in the On Page boxes. I want to see that there are no lines with full red here or lines with 3 Yes's. I want to find keywords that people are not optimzing for. So the Title should be N, URL N, Desc N, Head N.

If it meets that criteria I write it down and use it as a topic for a new article.

I use that exact keyword phrase in the Meta Title, Description and Keywords. Add it as the Title of the Post, write it in first paragraph, add it to last paragraph. I also add at least one photo and use it as the Alt tag with a few other words too. And link it if I can to another article on my site.

    Traffic Ideas

Since I've given up on manipulating Google for SEO, I've decided to take another route for traffic. I am now mainly focused on building Social Media traffic. My theory is that if I can build up a huge social media following, eventually Google will like my site again and start ranking my pages. As, people will start sharing my article and reposting them with natural backlinks as they are considered high quality.

To build up my fan base I am not employing these techniques.

Every new article I write I add it to my FB page and send out on TW. On the tweet I add hashtags to the end that peopel follow in my niche. I add about 5 hashtags. I also put Please Retweet! after the URL link - then the hashtags. I read that studies show this gets more retweets by adding that simple phrase. The hashtags ensure that not only do my followers get the tweet but also those following my niche see it too.

On FB I've started to post on other pages posts. Instead of spamming them like others I have seen that say "LIKE my page!" "Visit my Page!" instead I actually add a good response to the person's post.

I follow a ton of pages within my niche and when I see a post that has a lot of likes and comments I log in as my page and then post a comment on it. I try to write a couple of sentences response thinking that other people that see the post will read my comment since it looks long and real. I don't say VIST MY PAGE. I am hoping my goood responses will encourage people to visit my page by clicking on my name. My name also has my niche title in it with the word Free so hopefuly people will click on it.

I have been also sharing these other pages posts on my page. I figured, my followers don't always need information from me. By sharing it makes me look mor authentic and caring about my niche. It also alerts the people who have already commented or liked the post that I have now shared it. Another soft way to encourage people to click on my page to check me out.

    In conclusion

I am really trying to build up my social media fan base. My theory is that if I can get more people to like my page and follow me on TW, when I DO post an affiliate link or promotion people will be willing to listen as it is only about 5-10% of my posts. Most posts are related to my niche and sharing good information. Making me credible and trustworthy. Also I then DON'T have to rely on Google for traffic. If they make another update I don't have to worry as I have a huge fan base. This in turn should also help build my rank in Google as I become a trusted source and articles start ranking again. They are already properly optimzed for on page SEO.

    Update:

    Adscend Media

Today I was accepted to Adscend Media.

I found an offer related to my niche. It is a free program and pays after install. I created an attractive graphic and linked to it. I place this in my sidebar.

My sidebar now consists of: Subscribe box, Graphic to download free samples of my products, Adsense Ad, Facebook Like Box, Adscend Ad, Amazon Ad.

I just wrote a review of the adscend program as a blog post to help capture more clicks. I will post it on Monday.

    Youtube

I have an idea for creating my on youtube video series. In essence, taking an article I wrote and giving the highlights of it. THen telling people to visit my site for more details. This is a long term goal but i dont have time to do it right now.

So...although grey hat I decided to try a youtube method to grain traffic. I read another post on BHW about ripping youtube videos and reuploading them.

I found popular videos in my niche. Downloaded them using SaveVid. Added my own URL watermark. Added a 15 second pad to the end where I added annotations to Watch More of my Videos and Subscribe to my Channel.

I copied the title, description and tags of the video I downloaded. I put some extra words in the title and added more text to the description to make it unique. In the description I put my URL first.

I now have 4 Youtube videos. I hope they don't get taken down. We'll see.

    Update:

I'd also like to mention that last month I contacted about 100 other websites related to my niche about writing guest blog posts. I used Market Samurai to check the PR of these sites and only contacted ones with PR 3 or higher.

To my surprise I got 2 sites to agree to a link exchange. Both were PR 3.

I also got 2 sites to agree to let me guest blog on their site. So, I just rewrote an existing article currently on my site and sent it to them. They both posted it and I got an Author Bio link back to my site on a PR 4 and PR 5 site.

I'd like to work this into my business strategy to gain high PR backlinks. It is slow, but legit.

Question for followers... does it matter how many backlinks i get from each site? Should I only worry about getting 1 backlink from each site or is it better to have many? I am wondering if i need to keep supplying the existing sites with more articles or just write 1 and move on. Does anyone know the answer to this?

Well good luck with this journey! I agree, the slow but legit white hat methods are going to end up being the only real sustainable methods. Penguin, however, is not an on-page thing. That's Panda. Penguin is about your anchor text. Don't use the same keyword anchor too much. Read up more about that and save yourself tons of heart ache!

agreed. unfortunately when I bought the backlinks and linkwheel I used the same keyword text. I didn't know.

Now I am just using backlink keyword text as my URL. I figure that is the safest bet now.

mate if you've been hit by penguin, I would check your anchor text breakdown and make sure the majority is branded. Don't have high amounts of any exact match anchor text, otherwise this could have been why Penguin hit you.
