I have been reading a lot of journals and follow me threads on BHW lately and it has inspired me to create my own. My goals with this thread is to help keep me inspired to move forward with my goal of getting rich using the internet. And, if it works I think it would be great for others to learn from my business strategies as well - to show it is possible. This first post will be rather long as I want to give everyone my history and previous attempts to make money and how it has turned out. This can help you understand what I have gone through and what has or has not worked for me. My History About two or three years ago I decided that I wanted to get rich using the internet. I had followed the Thirty Day Challenege a while before that and it really inspired me to move forward. So, I found a niche I was interested in and started a wordpress blog. My method was to find how-to articles from other websites that I could copy and paste onto my site. I also added a link back to the original author's site as the source in case they ever came knocking on my door for posting their article. I then went through the article and changed some of the text to re-optimize the article for a particular target keyword. I would add the keyword in all meta tags, in an h2 or h3 tag, and stuff it to about 3-4%. At that time I was only using Google's Keyword Tool to find keywords. I'd look for keywords related to my niche with high searches and then go to Google itself and type the word in using quotes. This provides exact match results. I'd target keywords with less than 150,000 exact match results. The blog itself was and still is two column with a right sidebar. On it I placed Google Adsense in two positions - the right sidebar and after the article. I also searched online for existing product review articles. I would copy those articles and paste them on my site too and link to my amazon affiliate account. My income model was to make money off of Adsense clicks and Amazon Affiliate links from the product reviews section. For about a year things were going ok. I started getting some traffic and making about one dollar or less per day. But, things never jumped. I was posting new articles randomly whenever I felt the need. I had no system in place. Around October of 2011 I decided to get serious about my site, internet marketing and getting rich. So, I started to more research and found that Google hates duplicate content. That is why I was not getting much traffic or making much money from my site. Not many pages were getting indexed because they were essentially duplicates with a few words changed here and there. So, I decided that if I was going to be serious about this than I would have to write original articles. But, I wasn't an expert in my niche. So how could I do that? My solution was to find keywords using the methods I mentioned above and then search for those keywords to find relevant articles. I would then use that article as inspiration to write an original article. That way I didn't have to be an expert on the subject. I could fake it. All I cared about was getting people to the site to click on links to make me money! After I started writing my own articles things started to get better. The traffic to my site started increasing and with it Adsense revenue and Amazon revenue started growing. Between October and December of 2011 my adsense started to see some $8-9 dollar days. Around Christmas I made about $150 in amazon revenue. It was great! By just writing original articles and keyword stuffing them I was getting results! I was still posting articles randomly. Maybe two in one week and none in another. After starting to make some real money from my site I started thinking that I should probably get serious about this. I figured if I could make $5-8 dollar days doing in haphazardly just imagine what I could make if I started mapping out a business plan. So, in December 2011 I found and read a book called Launch by Michael Stelzner that changed my mindset completely on internet marketing. I felt like this book was written just for me. It outlined a smart strategy to building an internet business in ways I never thought of before. If you have not read it I highly recommend it! Everything I am doing from this point forward online is in response to the teaching in that book. And, things I am learning on BHW. My Goal This journal will be a log of everything I do moving forward to create a succesfull business online. At first, I just wanted to make a quick buck or two online but after a year of experience and knowledge I have changed my mindset to actually creating a real business. One that will last for many years. A business that dominates a niche and is the leader in its field. Some Things That Have Worked For Me Throughout the years I have done some things that have produced good results that I'd like to share. On my blog I added a 468x90 google adsense banner ad below my article title and before the first paragraph of text. This jumped my earnings by 50%. This continues to be my highest clicked ad and shows a small change can make a big difference. I added a popup box when all visitors come to my site that says "Subscribe and Get Free Stuff. Join over 16,582 other people and subscribe to our free email list. We'll send you weekly updates and give you a heads on our free giveaways." with an email subscribe button. This took my monthly subscribers from about 20 to over 200-300. I think the fake high number makes people think it is popular and is easier to convert to subscribers. I started adding articles on a weekly schedule. My goal is to do two per week. To help with this I reinvest my money into an article writer who writes articles for me for $10 a piece. I found my writer through CG. All articles are original. This has also helped because with regular content I got picked up by another blog that posts links to my site. This other site is highly visited and sometimes I get a majority of my traffic from that site and can boost it by a couple hundred visits per day. Throughout some articles I add a link to an amazon affiliate product. I link the text of something that is talked about. This has seemed to help. Although I have ideas to improve this. I started a facebook page and twitter account. I bought Fiverr gigs to give me fake followers to make it look popular. At first I did not get many followers but now using the fake likes it has helped me get a few new likes per day as my facebook and twitter accounts now look popular. I created a few informational products related to my niche and sell them on my website. I only get about 2-3 sales from it each month. Even though I have a sidebar graphic that says "Free Download Samples" where they can sample the product before getting the full thing. I don't get many converts or clicks through it though. I do also put them on eBay and sell about one each for each week. Some Things That Backfired I got hit by the Google Penguin update pretty hard. It knocked my traffic in half. I think it is because I was keyword stuffing my articles with 3-5% and a few months ago I purchased a few Fiverr gigs (one web 2.0 link wheel and the other crappy forum backlinks.) Now I am going back through my articles to reduce the keyword density. Which I hope will help get these pages ranked again. Not sure how to fix the crappy backlinks. From this point forward my on-page SEO strategy is this: I only add the keyword in the title, meta tags, once in the first paragraph, once in last paragraph, as an Alt tag to a photo embeded in article and sometimes as a link title if i can link out to wikipedia or some other source and use it. ---------------------------------------------------- I will keep this thread updated with the different things I am doing and the affects I think they are having. Thanks for following me!
