Just an idea and a twist on another method I've tried only this would involve much less work on your end...Bhatters please chime in. Lets hear your thoughts and ideas on this method!! 1. Go to google maps and identify 50 businesses who dont have a website yet (or less if you dont have the budget) 2. go see if the domains are available for their business. Get the BEST domains so there is NO mistake that it is their business. If they are available then purchase them. (NO TRADEMARK WORRIES HERE IF THE BUSINESS IS JUST A SMALL TIME LOCAL BUSINESS. THEY HAVE MOST LIKELY NOT REGISTERED THEIR NAME AS A TRADEMARK. I HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS BUYING DOMAINS WITH LOCAL BIZ NAMES IN THEM.) 3. Make up a company name for yourself (oh i dunno...Georgia Domain Security) Call or even better go into these businesses and explain to them that you are a local internet hosting company and you secure domain names for local businesses. You do this because there are "domain hijackers" that are starting to target the local area who are buying up local domains and installing pornography on them. (this will tie into the story later) 4. Now, they will either ask to find out more about this and end up purchasing the domain from you or they will say "NO". 5. First, lets assume they decide to purchase this domain from you to protect their businesses identity and credibility. I propose selling it to them for $50. Now you can upsell them to other versions of their domains @ $20 a peice. After they buy the domain(s) they need to get a website up there right? Well, before you leave you make sure to tell them that you are running a special for local businesses who "secured" domains with you. You will design and install a basic 3 page website with their business info on it for an extra $200. You can throw a simple WP site up in a few hrs. You are golden chico. 6. Secondly, lets assume they dont care and decide NOT to buy/secure the domain from/with you. Well, give it about 3 days and then write them a letter that goes something like this: Now once they ready this letter they will most likely go online to see if their domain is available. THey will soon find out that it IS NOT available. The kicker here is that you still do own it and you have now embedded an embarrassing youtube video onto the one page website that now occupies their domain. I recommend putting a dancing over sized fat chick on there. Nothing too horrible, just enough to get their blood boiling. They key here is to install a paypal button (use a discreet email and name for your pp account) that says: "This Website is For Sale. Buy it Now and Do What You want with it: $197" Will they buy? Most likely. Can you get in trouble? I dont see why. You are not violating any trademarks. You just happen to own the domain of a local business in your area. Who says you cant install a dancing fat chick in a bananna thong on your site? There is no nudity. Is this ethical? Well...thats a tough one. This is definently black hat. Either way you are helping these businesses out because they need to get off their ass and get with the program..get online its 2009! Damn it! You are getting them online for alot cheaper than they would have to pay a large web design company. Will you get your ass kicked? I dont see how. Just be careful to make sure that there is no way that these people can find out that you infact do own this domain. DONT leave a call back number with the biz owner if they say NO to begin with. They will have no point of contact except for the buy it now button. Good luck. Hate this idea, love this idea whatever. I welcome your thoughts..maybe we can throw a twist on this.
