At face value it looks like most of the top rated fiverr gigs for social media promotion are scams and will only promote your website to fake friends/followers, which will generate no actual traffic. Has anyone had any luck with these types of gigs?

And if you wouldn't mind sharing, let us know which gigs you used.

I think the use of these "followers/friends" are for the illusion of authority rather than traffic. Real people are more likely to follow an account with 1,000 followers than 10.

    I hope that helps.

    Cheers.

For social media Fiverr is pretty much to just give your brand a fake image that it has followers. Also, be careful because a lot of the services the followers drop almost instantly from what they said they would deliver. If you want to make your brand look "famous" then fiverr is fine, if you're looking for some real traffic, take a look at some other strategies offered here on BHW

I tried one of those just for the sake of trying, to check out the story they will sell. It was something like Millions of followers, likes deal...they wil share on their "super popular" kind of a page. Then they started trowing some kind of screenshots and reports and in the middle of that crap I told them to stop doing this cause I don't want their fake crap in my Inbox anymore.
So, no, it's not a scam, because you can't expect something great for $5, but is
    total crap

You're probably right about that. I made a page about my website on facebook and I'm going to try one of these gigs to get likes on it, then promote it on my own facebook. Maybe that'll generate some traffic instead of just relying on tweets and promotional status updates to fake followers.
