I am sharing my experience of transforming as a digital marketer from a programmer. These are the five important lessons I have learnt in five years of digital marketing career.

#1: Persistence: In digital marketing, we have very less competition compared to other fields, because many marketers will come and try few methods, if that failed they simply walk away. I did the same in my earlier stage, but I got some good friends like Kevin who motivated me to do well and i keep trying harder. I learnt to keep on trying till i achieve the goal. It's not something like PLAN A or PLAN B.. its something like execute all your plans from A-z till we find the success. Persistence is the key for any business model i believe.

#2: opportunity In Failure: I learnt to look at the failure as an opportunity. For example, if we try some method or business model#1 if that fail, we don't need to look at new method/ideas, we can easily find the new method or opportunity from the failed method#1.So if method#1 failed, I will grab some idea/lesson from the failed method#1 and try method#2. If method #2 failed, I will grab some ideas/lessons from method#1 and method#2 and try method#3... until we find the winning method.

#3: Freelancer As a Marketer: I have transformed myself as a marketer 5 years back. It's really a blessing to be a programmer as well as a marketer. When I design a product/idea I will think myself as a pure marketeter, when I program the ideas, I consider myself as a pure programmer. It's kind of split personality in me.I learnt the important lesson to look at the business model as a programmer as well as a marketer.

#4: Emotional Vs Practical: I never took warren buffet's advice "Don't put all your Eggs in one basket" seriously unless until last year I lost my whole business along with 70k USD over night. That failure was a great opportunity for me to redefine my business model.I never took that failure as emotionally.Instead,I took that as an opportunity, redeveloped my business from scratch and reached the same level, even much better. The important lesson I learnt is not to take my success and failure emotionally. I started to look at everything practically.

#5 Asking The Right Question To Yourself: Till 2015, I was just a freelancer and selling my service and developing products for other marketers to make huge money for them. At one point of time I asked myself, if someone can make a money from the tool/program I have developed why can't I ?. The question changed my life and pushed me to learn marketing and convert all my active income to passive income. Asking the right question to yourself is really, very important.

Thanks for sharing your story, mate.

Programming is such an underrated skill to have as a marketer. Most top marketers today know at least a little front-end development (JS).

Makes you lethal in IM :)

All people should have marketing skills. It is more important than designing a good product in my opinion.
