    Hi,

Just about to purchase a domain from Go Daddy and being asked if I want the following options which I don't know if are necessary or not?

    • Privacy option to hide whois details. Can see why it might be useful but is it important?
    • Custom email addy. Guessing make sense to get this?
    • SSL Certificate. No idea if I need this or not? Will probably be selling stuff using Paypal as the payment provider if that makes any difference.

    So do I need them?

    Thanks.

    • Privacy option: No. Unless you don't want someone to find out who you are from a whois lookup.
    • Custom Email: No. Your server will do all that.
    • SSL Certificate: If you're going to redirect to paypal then no. If you want to accept credit card transactions on your own site then yes. But this can wait and you can find cheaper SSL certificates than Godaddy.

Don't buy privacy and custom email id from Godaddy.
Namecheap offers it for free for the first year.

Just buy the domain without any extra options and then if you find that need an extra you can just add it later.

Edit: Oh and don't forget to add a coupon code to your order to save a few $, google them, there are plenty.

Pay for the private registration. Do you really want the world to know who you are including your home address?
Forget the SSL and the custom email

    1) Yes, because you don't need people to know who you are, etc... It has risk, no benefit.
    2) No, because you lose that if/when you change hosting. That's firmly in the "so what" catagory. Use gmail or other free email service.
    3) Yes, but only if it's cheap.

    Using godaddy is a mistake.

Go with internet.bs, they offer free domain privacy registration.

Use goduddy and you'll be sorry later. I'm transferring my domain from goduddy to namecheap this month.

What's so bad about Go Daddy? I thought they were generally recommended.

Higher renewal fees for one thing. $12.99 for a .com vs $10.69 at namecheap.
