I've made god knows how many hundreds if not thousands of sites but I got a 3 letter brandable (it pronounces a word relating to a niche) domain and I want to take my first crack at starting a forum. (No its not IM based)

I can do all the SEO and rank it but I know the hardest part is populating; what do you recommend? Stealing/scraping (and possibly spinning) content, fake populating user base, hiring people to be members for like a month or two requiring them to do say 10 posts a week for a monthly fee.

ANY suggestions/feedback would be appreciated here, I've always stayed away from forums because I know they're a bitch to startup but I want to try it out :)

When I first got into IM biz I've found another IM forum that was not so populated and was just starting up and they had (still have it) a bot that was scraping other IM forums (BHW included, but I only realized after I found BHW) and posting on their own. Mainly free stuffs to attract members.

And now is doing pretty well.
There are currently 662 users online. 153 members and 509 guests
Most users ever online was 4,784, 06-22-2011 at 07:22 PM

I hope this gives you an idea...

That's kind of what I was thinking. Scrape other forums in the same niche and maybe hire 10-20 other users to make 10 posts a day for the first couple months for some extra believability.

And of course populate the member list a bit automatically.

Yeah, the down size of this is in those posts I saw a lot of times saying "I made this e-book/script/whatever exclusive for the BHW members" or "Use cupon "BHW" and get 30% OFF" or "blah blah BHW best forum in the world".
And this is how I found out about BHW :)

So you'll have to block the bot from posting certain words like the names of other forums/sites in your niche or otherwise you'll just make it to work for others.

It looks like your permissions are correct to allow users to post and create threads however, as stated, there is no post button. Might be the theme you're using?

You can do it manually be editing the file in a notepad. Also I suggest you bring issues like this to the phpbb forum they'll be more helpful for you.

I think contests would be a good way to kick-start
    interaction in a big way.

"What is your NUMBER ONE tip to XXX your XXX?"

    Best answer gets free YYY!

Hold one of these every X number of weeks etc to
    keep people coming back.

Or if your niche involves aesthetics (design, pets,
setups), you could make them post their stuff and
let people vote for the "Awesome Picture of the Week".

Give them related 'free stuff' and promote it on relevant forums. It worked great for me in the past.
