This is quite a big change as Firefox has huge user base. Would it be the beginning of the end for Googles domination?

No. It only affects those whom had default settings, and even that I'm not sure of as I created a new profile (for other reasons) and it defaulted to Google.

It's rather sad, I hope Yahoo didn't pay too much because they will most likely not make much out of it.

Yahoo Sees 3x Jump In Firefox Searches With Browser Update

The first version of Firefox - 34 - to utilize Yahoo as the default launched this week, and it appears to already be helping Yahoo significantly.

StatCounter says on December 2nd in the US, Yahoo search was used three times more on Firefox 34 than on Firefox 33.

The firm found that Yahoo usage on Firefox 34 was 29.4% compared to 9.6% for Firefox 33. Google search usage by Firefox users dropped from 82.1% to 63.5% as they upgraded to the new version, it found, and Bing declined from 6.5% on Firefox 33 to 5.8% on Firefox 34.

There are millions of people who have no idea how to change default search and many who probably don't care, it was always going to be beneficial to yahoo.

I was thinking of taking my words back (read above) but then I thought give it time and lets see how that percentage figure carries on.

On second thought, I may be completely WRONG! I've just realized that people LOVE to get distracted with "news", "media", "funny shit", and so on all the time. Yahoo might just be great for them because it will not only allow them to search, it will be their page for EVERYTHING!

Kind of sorta, but not completely.

First find the ad on "Add on bar Restored" and install it. The right click in an open area of the tabs and select "Menu Bar" and "Bookmarks bar." This will get you pretty close. You can also tinker in the config file to turn off the orange FF button. Google how to do this.

More than this I wish there was a way to feed anything that wants adobe a false set of information so that a person does not get constant nags to install adobe flash because HTML5 does not need flash to display flash.

not that big of a change for Google, but it helps Yahoo nevertheless

to put those above numbers in another perspective:
Firefox's share of the browser market is below 20% and declining slowly but steadily, how many of those are US users i don't know exactly, assuming it's around 20%, now Yahoo managed to get that 20% increase amongst this many users, if you see this way, you can come to the conclusion, this change won't hurt Google much, however it will help Yahoo a bit which they need

also the tendency is that Chrome usage is increasing (5-6% this year), Firefox usage declining (around 4-5% this year), so the effect this change might have, will be just smaller and smaller with time

if it would have been a big deal for Google, they would have outbid Yahoo

It's a big change for google as it changes a lot of things.
If you take a close look at Bing. yahoo and google results, the quality is similar for a majority
of the searches. In fact, I personally prefer Bing except for long tail queries (Google is far ahead).

This benefits yahoo/bing in two ways.

    1. With bigger market share, users will find that they can still use bing and get similar quality results.
    2. It feeds more data to bing/yahoo combine which means that they can now improve their results much quicker.

Microsoft should seize the initiative by burning more money in their search division.
They lag far behind in crawling (both in terms of overall size of index and frequency of crawl).

Now the only thing left is for Facebook to offer search and utilize Bing to power that search. They already do that but its not their focus.
Once it happens, Google will significantly lose its influence on internet and that would be a good thing.

call me a nay sayer, but i just can't see this happenning

Chrome's market share soon to be at 2/3rd and that's what really counts, not the 20% (increase in Yahoo usage) of the 20% (US FF users) of the 20% (FF market share), which won't be anywhere near enough to initiate that big change you suggest would happen especially when the tendency works against Yahoo

Just like IE. every company uses IE because its their. Nobody installed Chrome or Firefox.

And if firefox or chrome are installed they dont know how to change the default browser. I believe Yahoo its still on the market without seeing any statistics.

But if FB comes out with a search powered by Bing.. things could change.

that's a very strong "if" :), what i wrote above i meant for the change in FF default search exclusively

i see Yahoo/Bing as the Myspace of search engines sadly, once they were big, then they went poof, always trying, but never really succeeding

Yahoo in its present state would need to enable God mode or have at least some serious cheat codes to be able to catch Google

Already google losing its market share to amazon. People are directly going to respective authority sites to get their info. Like amazon, wikipedia, espn, fb/twitter pages ..

It's for the good, now people will start ranking not only in google but also in yahoo and bing and it will make the game easier, I know people who promote via PPC and they are not coming close to google they prefer lower prices and same amount audience.
