I was working in a food factory and ended up walking out today. Basically i was travelling abroad for the past 5 years or so... since arriving back in my home country, i needed a job quickly and the first thing that came up, was working in a frozen food factory.

The work was boring, repetative, half the people i was working with were alcoholics, had no teeth and just in general, people who are not motivated in life.

Whilst working there... i would get a week where i would work 3 days, then not work for 1 to 2 weeks and then only get a couple of days. It just wasn't working for me financially...

I approached the manager to talk about more hours but when i talked to him, he got really pissy and seemed angry and spoke to me like shit, which caused me to react and shout at him.

I went to speak to the guys in the office but they said they would have to speak to manager. They just got in touch with me 5 minutes ago, to tell me that they spoke to the manager and he has said he "wouldnt feel comfortable working with me any longer, as i shouted at him in front of other staff members" - when it was him who started it, i just lost my temper and thought fuck this....

anyways, my issue is that this is my first job, since i was travelling the past 5 years... now i am looking for another job... but obviously i am going to get a shit reference, so cant use them.

I can't not lie that i worked there ? as it will be on my P45 tax thing...

does anyone have any ideas on how i can get round this, as i need another job badly and fast.

You can just say you worked there, but you had aspirations to use your brain more or something - switch it up and say the job wasn't right for you.

It's the festive period, maybe you can do something in a shop or something while you sort something permanent.

Seems like you had plenty of time to look for a new job. Never leave a job until you have got another one lined up.

Sounds like Manchester....

Depending on where you are, there's always casual labour work, bar work, restaurant work and retail stores this time of year are always on the look out for temp staff.

You are overthinking things, if you apply for a temp job, get it then your P46 will show that employer and not the current one.

See, i was working as a temp with the frozen food factory - when i registered, i had to give my P46 to them...

are you saying, if i got a new job, i would just hand in my p46 again ? and there would be no issues ?

It's up north a bit further up but all the same aren't they lol.

Team leader would openly admit to drinking 4 to 5 pints of vodka a night, had 1 front tooth, which was yellow and black and was on probation. Yes this was my "team leader" - when you are working around these kinds of people, it's like they have given up on life and have no motivation to do anything.

I was wanting to do this... however, it felt like i was strung along - there was constant promises off "loads of work coming in" then nothing and getting chucked a couple of days work, he are there. I thought with xmas coming up, that they would be super busy - turns out, it was the opposite. I feel stupid now for not getting another job, whist i was there but thought it would pick up... wasn't expecting my managers reaction, which rubbed me up the wrong way. Was heat of the moment kind off thing.

yeah do that, it's HMRC's problem, not the employer.

Will try this, was under the assumption that my new employer would get a p45, where it would show, i worked with another recruitment agency. Then thought, they might question who i was working for and why did i leave. Obviously, if they ask for a refernce, my manager would give a shit reference out of spite.

That's what the P46 is for, you give that if you don't have anything else, the only reason the employeer needs it is for your HMRC tax code.

At least he still has a job.

That is correct. However, gives you an idea on how thing are run. They only have a job, as they are personal friends of the manager, some of them working together for 30 years.

Factories can be crap places to work! I worked in them on and off for years while working on other things - just block it out and stay focused on a worthy larger goal.

BTW having one tooth doesn't make you a bad person - could be an indicator that you need to invest in toothpaste, but some of the nicest/smartest people I've met would be the kinds of people you wouldn't expect by their appearance.

Thats what people say but there are some jobs that just aren't worth it no matter what anyone says i've quit many jobs without a backup one but I've always been confident in my ability to find another one and its always worked out.
