Does anyone know how to check how many searches a keyword gets in a certain area?

I know that may sound confusing, but I'm doing SEO for a friend of mine and he's in an industry that has nothing to do with Internet Marketing, but I made a Google Places account with a local listing.

For example, say the keyword 'doctor Los Angeles' gets 100 searches a month (I'm sure it gets much more, but just stay with me). Obviously if someone is in Los Angeles and just searches 'doctor' they'll get local listings and the search count would be much higher.

So, is there anyway to find out how many searches a keyword gets in a local area?

Thanks! :D

Yes, Google Adwords Keyword Tool gives you an estimated idea of the local search.

Although, I use 'Keyword Country' for local keyword research. It gives me estimated searched and competition for the keyword in the targeted region.

Google Keyword tool is the obvious choice.

But what I would do is set up an adwords account for terms that you think may get searched as exact terms.

Then see how many times your ad has appeared over a certain period of time.

I like the idea of setting up an ad and then see how many impressions that gets. Although I'm more looking for local search in terms of states. Even more local than countries? Does any keyword tool do that?
