Note: I will try to update this thread with new niches, so feel free to bookmark and check the latest posts to keep yourself updated with new lesser known but still profitable niches.
Google Trends is the best free tool to help you understand what the world is searching for at any moment. It can give you niche ideas, keyword ideas, content ideas, and more. It’s one of my favorite free market research tools, so let's jump in.
First, you start by going tohttp://trends.google.com/. Now, I’m going to use this as a research tool, but if you have a newsletter where you're constantly putting out the hottest topics and breaking news, go under the "Trending Now" section. It’s got the latest searches from the past day, or you can even break it down to the past 24 hours. This will show you what the most-searched phrases and topics are in a very short period of time.
But for now, let's see how we can check a niche stat in Google trends and find out if it's worth our time and money or not. In the homepage, enter a keyword or a niche idea in the main search bar. Let’s start with "vegan diet". You can see that it gives two options:
"vegan diet" as a search term
"vegan diets" as a topic.
Personally, I focus on the search terms first:
I use a US VPN and that's why the country is set to the United States by default, however, you can change it to worldwide or your local geo. It also defaults to show data from the past day, so the graph shows a 24-hour trend. I prefer a longer-term view, so I choose past 5 years for my research.
Here you can see clearly that over the last five years, interest in veganism has been declining, with a few spikes here and there:
I’ll explain how to read and interpret this data in a moment, but first, let me show you more information available to you that can help you find a good niche. When you scroll down the page, you can see that countries with the most interest in this topic are: UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand are the top four, while the US is in the number five:
Below that, you get related topics and related queries. Related topics are useful for creating products or doing niche-down. For example, "raw veganism" is a breakout topic, showing that people interested in veganism are also interested in raw veganism. This could help you create a mini-course, e-class, e-book, cookbook, and so on. This is how you can get product ideas.
On the related query side, these are actual keyword phrases that people are searching for. You can make blog posts or videos on these topics. For example, "why do people fail on a vegan diet while others succeed?" This could be a clever, creative idea that would absolutely get clicks. It would get attention on Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest. These are the types of topics you could create long-form content around and get traffic for that.
However, the real power of Google Trends is in comparing different options and ideas to see what your marketplace values most. Let’s add "carnivore diet" as a comparison to the "vegan diet" These two diets could not be more different, and you can see that while veganism has been trending down, the carnivore diet has been trending up over the last five years.
If I were creating a health-based brand or a weight-loss boot camp, this graph would show me which topics are growing in popularity and which are declining. This information helps ensure that the content I create today, whether it’s blog posts or YouTube videos, will still be relevant in the future.
Let’s add a third comparison: the "keto diet" This graph shows how big of a trend the keto diet was back in 2019.
Now, let's talk about reading the data. The graphs with three colors (yellow, red and blue) show interest in the searched keyword/topic over time.
The 100 mark represents the highest point of search interest. In early March 2019, more people searched for "keto diet" than any of the other phrases in the past five years.
Now lets back to the two main search terms we have started with:
Let’s do another example. Let’s add "HIIT workout" and "bodyweight workout."
If I were building a weight-loss brand, I’d need to figure out which workout routines to recommend. You can see from the graph that "HIIT workout" is searched more often because its line is higher. You can also change your location to see region-specific data.
Scrolling down, you can find related topics and queries.
For instance, “madfit hiit workout” is a query. If I were looking for affiliate marketing partners, I might look into people like madfit hiit workout, who have products and courses I could recommend.
You can also compare markets to see which one deserves more attention. Let’s search "Bitcoin" In early February 2024, Bitcoin was priced at about $50k, slightly below all-time highs, but the search volume is nowhere near its peak. This sentiment graph shows interest over time, and comparing this to price action could give insight into market trends.
Adding "Ethereum" and "Solana" to the graph shows that Bitcoin dominates search interest compared to other cryptocurrencies. Ethereum and Solana barely register, while Bitcoin takes all the search data. Switching the graph to worldwide still shows the same trend.
If we zoom in on the past 12 months, we can see that there was a point in late 2023 when "Solana" had a higher search volume than "Ethereum." This is valuable insight, showing shifts in interest that might not be obvious from just looking at crypto Twitter. As interest in a specific cryptocurrency increases, theoretically, more people may purchase it, driving demand.
Google Trends is a great tool for finding great keywords, trending topics, and niche ideas. It can help you find an undeserved audience and create content, products, or a brand that resonates with them.
