This has been posted before, but it's important enough to post it again.

The US Congress is considering America's first system for censoring the Internet.

The fact is that this legislation as written won't stop piracy. But it would pose a serious threat to social media and user generated content sites (like YouTube) across the internet. It could also undermine some of the core technical systems underlying the internet, creating new cybersecurity risks.

Despite public outcry, the Internet Censorship bill could pass at any time. If it does, the Internet and free speech will never be the same.

In the USA, citizens contacting their representatives is the best way to stop this type of legislation. Let your Senators know if they vote for this bill, they will guarantee you won't vote for them ever again.

Call now to stop this censorship. Take 3 minutes to save the web. Call your Senators.

If this shit passes, the internet as we know will never be the same. Pretty annoying that people in america have the power to control the whole worlds internet.

If this is aproved this can be changed for others countries and this sucks anyeway!

Yeah. That's why it's important even for people in other countries to pass this along to their lists, or link to the information on their websites. Even if you can't pressure the legislators yourself, you can still help get the information to people in the U.S. who *can* contact their representatives.

People will not be notified of this until their favourite websites are gone.

This can include BHW as well if the authorities find that some publications on this forum is "non-compliant" to their policies. Bye bye BHW.

I'm not usually a big fan of online petitions as I don't think they work, but....

a) SOPA is fucking nightmare and
b) a Senator is going to read the name of each signature on this petition as part of his filibuster to stop SOPA, so...sign this early, sign this often:

The more names, the longer Senator Wyden can read and delay this piece of crap legislation.

This would destroy IM! I'm not an US citizen but I really hope the bill won't pass!

Then go to the first site GW cited:

and click "Not in the US". Has very helpful info, took me a total of about four minutes to register my concerns with the State Department and about eight minutes via avaaz to sign their petition and similarly register my concerns with two Senate offices.

The only way to fight it is to boycott the Federal Government, cut the amount of taxes that you pay and shun government agents including military persons. Like if you know anyone that works for the federal government stop talking to them and get your friends to do so. That way they will feel horrible about their jobs and it will affect their productivity. And if your a business owner and there are people that are applying for a position at your business, don't higher people that were in the military or any other government jobs.

Take all the max tax breaks that you can,and go even further,by setting up double Irish tax strategy for your business.

Your friends are most likely not going to stop talking to other friends because of your campaign against this specific bill, and the part about hiring people is clearly discriminatory, you are telling people to break the law, that isn't cool.

Yes, I agree 100% that this piece of legislation is not in the best interests of the vast majority of people. But saying that it can "pass at anytime" is scaremongering, I think I've said it in a topic here before about it, but the bill hasn't even made it out of subcommittee yet. It probably won't be even brought up for weeks or months, and even then it will probably be a longshot to make it out of committee. Not to mention the fact that it would have to pass both the House and the Senate, and get signed by the President.

It's not likely that this bill is going to end up anywhere near law, however that still shouldn't stop you from actively making your voice heard about the law, here is a great place to start: http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-s968/show

Yeah, the "could pass at anytime" is hyping the urgency a bit. Those words in the original post aren't mine though. That was copy and pasted from the AmericanCensorship.org and Mozilla websites.

Even though the bill is still working it's way through the legislative process, doesn't mean there isn't an urgency to it. If enough people voice their concerns to their representatives now then it has a chance to never make it out of committee. If it does make it to the floor, then the more people voicing there objections can help keep it from getting votes.

As I said before, the best that any marketers can do is to use their lists and websites to get the information out to as many people as possible. Even better to use their sales and marketing talents to convince people to take action.

Here is a good video on the subject from the americancensorship site. Apparently the bill is going to be voted into law very soon which is scary to say the least. It will no doubt have huge implications for IM. I really dont get why most people on here dont care?

Well, recently Indian Broadcasting and development Minister,

Made a statement in restricting facebook and twitter,

because many started expressing there comments in a harsh manner.

they are postings bad images of politicians as funny pics, adult pics and worst pics.

i hope these kind of moves make the american govt to think of doing censorship to US too.

I think you misunderstood the type of censoring we are talking about.

Hmm I dont know about this law much, but some law that would really work against piracy would be great, because we all could make much more mone selling the stuff :)
