So I am a female in the business world. However, funnily enoough, being the geek I am who is interested in computers, I don't tend to "dress up" much  I have found that doing so results in being taken more seriously.

How much more seriously do you take a female in business if they are dressed up?

Is there anything you look for particularly? Is it anymore so for girls than guys?

This isn't a feminist rant. In fact I'm looking at how best to conform, lol :D

I have to say that I would trust a business woman dressed up in a nice suit better than any other attire.

Edit: Not saying I wouldn't trust a woman dressed down a bit. Or in casual business attire.

I trust only naked women; I can see they aren't hiding any daggers to kill me when a business deal doesn't go her way :)

I think your instincts are right Windmill... A nicely dressed woman carries more weight in my eyes... even though it has nothing to do with what she knows. If someone looks the part, we initially give them credit for "knowledge" as well, until they prove us wrong.

I guess it's the old "first impression" thing.

I think personally this doesnt not just relate to gender I trust anyone that makes and effort to dress up in business it sends a message to everyone that you are serious about what you do and you respect them within business. I have never been one to not wear a suit if I have a professional meeting

No offence but most guys are "conditioned" to ignore women's lead.
Like for me, if a woman is the leader I wouldn't really listen to her orders.

UNLESS if she dresses appropriately. Instead of wearing a tight dress to reveal her thighs or figures, she should wear a women's business pants with blazer. Makeup should be minimal (not 1 kg of makeup.. common' you're in a corporate world not a whore business).
Attitude-wise she shouldn't be stuck-up. She must learn to smile and be patient.
Such ladies are the ones I respect totally. And when I say totally I mean I won't gossip or badmouth behind her or wishing that I will plow her one day or fantasize her on my bed.

Do keep in mind that is my preference and perspective. It doesn't answer the entire men's perspective and preference.

OH BOY, you are in for a big one. If you really think you will find a girl thats going to be intelligent and listen to everything you tell her, cause you said you don't want her to be "stucked up" , then you are very misinformed of retarded you sound.

She must learn to smile and be patient? lol wtf you want her to be like ur dog or something. Dogs do that, they smile and are patients when you are waving a piece of meat in front of them.

But in the other hand to the OP , as long as you look respectful and follow proper etiquette you should be fine. We are in the 21 first century , even though there must be still retards who still use those jokes such as " get back on the kitchen" . Most businessman don't really care much as long as your professional and your respectful plus I believe i've seen more female workers get higher position over the past few years.

Just wear professional attire, and present your business in a confident manner. You will do fine. Ignore the joke posts --- BHW is filled with punk arse 15 year olds and 25 year old virgins!

I think this applies to either sex, if you want to be taken seriously you need to dress the part. Regardless of the setting dress with intent. Dress confident and carry yourself likewise.

No I agree. This again isn't a feminist rant; but its just a fact that I am small in stature and I have a "girly" voice. It is something I came across in debating; males had an advantage immediately. Ultimately, that doesn't compete to the "authority" status that males can get from their deep voices and large figure. BUT, that doesn't mean I can't work in business of course :D got to find what image I can present to be an "authority" :)

I would say you dressup in business attire when you do a video presentation or put your pictures on blog. You don't have to be tall and well built like Russian chicks.

People in proper business tend to get more attention(unless you are Frank Kern who wears a T-shirt and records his NLP video showing glimpses of him driving Porsche on the highway telling you that everyone can make millions online!

Take Kim Roach as an example. She is not BIG as you say.Has got girly voice too and commands attention in the IM world.

Confidence is key but if you don't look the part you might have problems with some clients. I know I tend to get taken more seriously when I take my attire more seriously.

Suit and tie closes more deals than a polo shirt and khaki pants for me, but it all depends on who you're dealing with.

Well, yeah, the business attire... But what about looks?. I have a hard time being taken seriously because I look somewhat younger , which is a problem when potential clients try to low ball me on projects that clearly are worth way above what they offer. And it's not like I don't have a solid portfolio or anything, just them being prejudiced. I also hate it when I'm refered to as 'a girl' when it comes to anything work related.

I also have a problem with business and CPA calls because of my voice. I wish I had a deep voice like Toni Braxton or Kim Carnes. :(

No one is going to judge you for being a female here. If you know your stuff and you can deliver, what more is there to discuss.

There are many successful and respected female members on this forum, I have never seen anyone being dis-respectful.

Just mind your business and go on with things and I think most people won't blink an eye lid at you.

I don't really consider 'dressing up' a big deal in the business world. Although, you shouldn't come to a meeting looking like a bum.

I feel that by putting 'looks' aside, I can make better decisions based on focusing on what people are saying, how they are saying it, and the content (knowledge) they know.

I couldn't agree more; however the problem is more about IRL situations, and in my case some of my IM ventures suffer a bit too (phone calls). For most other things internet, it really doesn't make a difference :).

I find it difficult to work with anybody other than women. In fact I prefer women in charge 9 times out of 10. I could care less how anyone is dressed up, only amateurs pay attention to that crap these days. Unless you dress up like a hippy or a slut, it shouldn't affect the outcome.

At the end of the day its all about how a person carry themselves.

1 girl might have 1 outfit on and get lots of attention be talked about (behind her back), while another woman with the same outfit demands and gets respect.

Its hard to explain, either you know or you don't know.

    Bless,
