I need to get a website but I want to hide my whois info. Can I just get a hostgator account and lie about my personal info? Or do i have to spend extra to get whois protection?

Thanks.

You can get your whois details protected for free on several registrars such as godaddy and namecheap

You're talking about domain privacy, which is an option you can choose when buying a domain, not the hosting; name.c0m has free whois privacy.

thanks but i am having problems with every site cept hostgator. Can't I just lie about my personal info? Or will they find out?

first step, go and buy a domain from a registrar and apply private whois / domain privacy, then go to your web host company and sign up with them using your legit contact info.

The outside world will only see the contact info for the domain, not the host when they do a whois. Since you will have applied privacy to your domain, they will not see your personal details.

This is a free service with godaddy??? I was always under the impression that you had to pay to block the whois. What am I paying for then?!

You have to pay Extra 8.99 with godiddy to get a private whois protection on top of your domain register fee.. Another way is you register 5 domain at one shot with godiddy and get free whois protection for the 5 domains.

Only your domain company is the one u shld have the private whois and not the hosting company. So bottomline, find a domain registrant company that provide whois protection and you are good.

Personally i think godiddy is for mainstream noobs and should be avoided because u can easily find other companies that provide the private whois for FREE and still charge around same price for the domain name register itself.

I would recommend you check out netFirms. They provide Free whois protection and domain name register in one low price of 6.99 for the first year and 9.95 second year onward.
