I'm so tired of my family and friends thinking IM isn't a job! The other day I had a cookout and was telling them what I have being doing on the side for a while and making money. They look at me with jealousy and tell me what do you think you can make a full-time living online? I was so upset... I showed them a snapshot of my CB earnings and they still were like that is a BS, that won't last, blah blah blah. I have a cocky dentist as a brother in law that was being the instigator and I told him I would make more money them him 1 day without a college degree ( if he wasn't my brother in law I would of beat his arse by now!) and he laughed at me... PEOPLE LIKE THAT PUTS MORE FUEL IN MY FIRE AND MAKES ME WANT TO SUCCEED!!

What do you guys say to your family and friends about your IM career?

Well unlike you, my family is very supportive of IM. When I was a kid, my parents opened their own accounting firm and then ran it from home. They both retired before the age of 40. Because of this, they would love for me to be able to do something similar, even if it's online. Friends definitely don't take me seriously though. They think I sell drugs or something because they refuse to believe it's possible to make a full-time income online. LOL

Its really easy to look down on someone, and even easier to put someone down.

Growing up really poor people would put me down frequently making fun of me because of my really cheap shoes I would repeatedly wear that my mom purchased from payless shoe store. Ill never forget one kid said to me that his shoes was worth more than everything I was wearing, i was really pissed off but now I'm sure he is in prison with guys 24/7 and Im free with a very sexy female.

Ill never forget when I was a teen, at the age of 13 I went with my mother to visit my aunt, she let me use her computer and saw how happy it made it however when I was leaving she pulled me aside and told me that I should just stop about the idea of having a computer because its way too much and outside of my mothers ability because we were on welfare because of my mom being mentally disabled.

Anyway, at around 13 I get an opportunity to get a job by a friend, after a month I save up enough to buy a hp computer desktop and now I'm 27 and make 6 figures a year, now that same aunt I confronted a few years back and it was the best feeling to see her face and hear her voice in disbelief that I indeed made it in life doing what I am passionate about, it was one of the best feelings I ever experience.I have a G37 Paid OFF and she couldn't believe it was mine lol. Anway, the key is to show them you can do it don't tell them.

    Good luck on your venture.

Wow man... good for you! I plan on making 6 figures like you 1 day and will not stop until I do to not only shut these ignorant jerks up but for myself and my family.

Nothing will stop somebody succeeding quicker than surrounding themselves with negative people.

My advice is to not talk to them about it at all. Just humour them whenever the topic arises.

Only talk to people about your "career" who are supportive or can be of assistance to you in your quest. Surround yourself with influential people.

Ages ago I stopped concerning myself what others thought of me in anything I did.

What others say is inconsequential as to who you really are and what you are really doing.

I posted this in the other similar thread

"A major part of the issue is you caring about what others think and allowing it to demotivate you."

Like you say, have their attempts to dishearten you only encourage you to prove them wrong or literally, ignore it. Depending on your speciality within IM, renting an office may show them you're in it for the long game. There's nothing better than being your own boss. Ask your brother-in-law if he's ever known what it's felt like.

Unless your relatives are as bad as some of mine and they go out of their way to harm your business, just ignore them.

Change from the status quo has always scared people. You have to understand that these people are dinosaurs (no disrespect), ossified and slaves to a system that is so deeply ingrained into every aspect of their thought process, it's far easier to dismiss something than to consider it and perhaps experience a paradigm shift that would make them feel worse about their own lives.

As BTB said, it makes no difference to what you're doing, work hard, make money...success is the ultimate revenge.

Exactly. If all IMers gave in and ceased to exist, I'm sure they'd want us back fairly quickly.

I'll add how your family isn't the only one. Some people are just non-believers...
Let 'em, just like some BHW-ers above wrote. ;)

Non-believers... I once showed a few of my relatives how much I made from 1 of my first major clients, and they acted like the invoice didn't exist! They think I have 0 income despite the evidence that I don't, yet I somehow magically obtained everything I own. It's funny because they do the same thing to my cat; they hate cats, so whenever I bring up my cat in a conversation, they get quiet and avoid the topic as they refuse to acknowledge the existence of cats.

What a bunch of delusional idiots.

You do not need to prove anything. If you know that you are making money and you feel that you can make much more, just spend your energy on your work. People will see your results and this proof will be more powerful than 1000 words.

Well, my family and relatives also thought that I was just doodling in the computer when I told them I am doing IM.
I could never explain to my parents that I would earn real money from IM.
Truth to be told but my first ever cashout from IM was after 6 months I started working in IM ( and that was also just $3.02 ) but that put the faith in me and my parents that IM can bring some real money.
After working 2-3 years I was earning enough to pay our bills and make a living from this.
After 4-5 years when my father saw the potential in IM, he quit his job and joined me and now we both do IM :)
He maintains 8 blogs right now and monetize them using adsense.
And the relatives who made fun of me keeps sending their kids and tell me to teach them what I do, what a LOL :p

    Its called envy

Thankfully my parents are cool with this. My old man is always asking me every day "is it good today?" and in the end he will tell me " you can do better tomorrow", he is telling me this every day and its motivates me a lot.

Also my GF was not that supportive at first but now she is but she still does not look at it as a permanent thing. But I don't blame her, she spend here whole life educating her self, she is a PhD now in electrochemistry and she know only that road to success.

OP you can't blame people for being envy or simple they can't wrap there mind around it, just do your shit and make $$ that its all about.

Money is money, you show them the money and find yourself some new family and friends. Six billion people here, I'm sure someone will click with you. Good luck.

I would say that in contrary to your thoughts , you may be totally wrong , Indeed your family is always looking forward for you to succeed in life , they want you to go to college , study and then find a job like everyone does , that's what they want , that's what will make them happy , probably the fact that you are earning some money will make them think that you will get seduced by money and they are scared of that , don't get me wrong OP but family is like everything for the human being , keep that in mind and try to think on your parent's shoes
