Faking WhoIs info....

Yeah, i had an idea to fake whois info and get away with it. I know you're not supposed to fake it...and i know we all (most of us) do it....

so here's a nifty way to not put in your who is info and *hopefully* get a way with it...i haven't tried this yet...but i will do this with all my new domains:

Just for all your contact info put in: Whois Protection Enabled....this will make pple think your domain's being protected by a whois privacy company or somethin

Don't know if it'll work, although it'll probably stop people from trying to find out anything further. Your registrar would probably get pissed, but then again, I have no idea.

wont the domain provider just see it and boot you? You can choose a whois opt-out anyway which protects your details. I got busted reging with fake details recently but i did it in the end.
here is my method:
get a vcc, register as Joe Bloggs or whoever
for the address i use a big old house in my area that is now divided up into flats so if any paper work is sent out for the domain (which happens for .co.uk's sometimes - i think) it wont go to anyone so less likely to be returned to sender.
I also use a voip phone number so it looks like i have a house phone, and if they try to call i can answer
or you can use your vcc to get paypal and buy the domain that way.
Helps to have a mockup of a passport and a gas bill etc , scan in and photoshop, edit and fax it to anyone who requests it.

Tonlilaz - My friend tried this and I can't remember if he got away with it or not. I'll check with him and update.

Spaceinvader - You definitely go through quite a bit to make sure your butt is covered. But I like the process you have.

Just put in fake information at your registrar and a real email address. That way if any complaints come through you have options of what to do. You're emailed before any actions happen against you from your registrar.

I guess it really depends on what you're doing. I just use the whois privacy that's included with every domain I buy (unless I buy at Godaddy).

Yup, exactly. All that you need to do is put in a mailing address that appears realistic so it doesn't scream "THIS IS FAKE!!!!" and a real email address.

My domain provider told me to put in 'Administrator' as name, and a P.O.Box number for address. Also, you can put n/a (not applicable) for phone numbers
Create a gmail id for your domain and provide it. This has to be legit.

Or just buy your domain names at namescheap.
At less than $9 you get the domain with a free WhoIs Guard.

Why not use private registration?

Because private registration isn't private.
