I've been kicking this around in my head for a few years and perhaps now is the time to implement it based on the recent Google carnage. The idea I had is to create fake personas on the web so good that they appear to be real people. I'm talking more of a themed approach here. For example, a persona we'll call "Jack" likes Nascar, so every bookmark, 2.0 page, comment, etc. is themed toward his persona. I would then use Jack and others like him to link to a Nascar related site that I owned. The goal here would be to make the links to my money sites appear completely natural.

Obviously this will be time consuming and I'm uncertain of the payoff, which is the reason for the post. I would like the opinions of my fellow black hat brothers and sisters. Is this a total waste of time, or do you think it has potential?

in my opinion it would be a waste of time, it would be the same as recommended sites or blogroll in any niche related blog. It would take lot's of time compare to any alternative that will achieve the same, but i'll be happy to hear other opinions

Good point, I know of those alternative methods as well and they are certainly less time consuming, but will they still work? I'm testing now, but it's too soon to know for sure what will float to the top.

What I would really like to have is that IBM computer that played Jeopardy. If I had something like that I would own the freaking Internet. :)

Where you might be able to make this work is through Google plus. Create a big network of friends in the same niche and +1 your site with that persona. If these people are logged in it may help drive some traffic from your circle with better rankings due to the +1 from your persona.

Yes, I know, but what I'm uncertain is if it would have staying power. If it does, and it beats future Google algo updates then it would be worth it to me. Hopefully someone will chime in on this thread stating that they've given this a try and it either worked or not.

If no one replies, I'll go ahead and pick a niche, try it, track it and post results over time.

Don't want to say to much, but you should take a look at how terrorist cells are formed...

Haha, well there's not a lot more of it than that, in a typical cell only one member is in contact with a superior but doesn't always know their where abouts, everyone in a cell knows everyone else in the cell and they maintain cover until they're needed.
If you just keep producing cells and you're fairly creative in what you do with them so that they appear to be sending natural signals (save for when you slip in your own) you have a very effective network which is proven to be insanely difficult to crack.

Done right it appears natural because it is.

Great concept thinking about the cells. Have you tried this out yet? I'd like to find other ways than G+ to implement this kind of strategy. It appears that it would work for 2.0's, wikis, bookmarks, etc. Of course using G's own tools makes it even sweeter! G+, Blogger, Youtube...
