If one were to hypothetically create a fake news release about the death of someone famous, say, Obama, do you think there would possibly be any legal consequences to this?

If you used the $349 press release here http://service.prweb.com/pricing/ it says it gets submitted to most of the major news outlets and if you're lucky they might publish it. Would it even be possible to get something like that released? And if it is, are you likely to be sued or arrested?

i'm pretty sure no one is going to reprint a press release about the death of someone famous without actually vetting the story first, so....waste of money. and if you want to try and make it about the president, you'll have the FBI and secret service on your doorstep in record timing, as that could be seen as a threat.

I wouldn't actually do it for the president, I would do it for a celebrity.

Doesn't work, the better way of doing that kind of thing is to say that the celebrity died on a website (make a reasonable looking story) then pay for likes on facebook or re-tweets, get the word our and it goes viral. then you'll have RIP **** trending on twitter in no time.

I actually am planning on trying it soon. I'm working on another project right now though but I'll have time to do it hopefully in the next week or so.

And yeah, I think I'll try eddy's plan of using facebook and twitter. I might try a free press release or two.
