Fail Blog makes a thousand bucks a day - How come we all don't scrape them?

So as was mentioned in my last thread, FailBlog seems to make between 500-2000 dollars a day in youtube revenue.

Moreover, FailBlog seems to merely find videos (of people falling) on the internet. And, posts the videos in their channel.

It does not appear that FailBlog bothers to check on who actually owns the videos - e.g. who was the original artist/photographer/participants. And the powers that be don't seem to care much if the videos reflect "stolen"/"unclaimed" content.

So the obvious question is, why can't we all just scrape the FailBlog channel, remove the FailBlog logo, and create our own FailBlog?

Afterall, it's not like they own the videos anyway.

    Or do they?

    Anyone got any info?

Hmmm really good point and something I've often pondered.

They seem to replace the original video with a copy with a watermark of the site on it.

According to the YT channel they require permission of the owner to submit a video.

But looking at the submission page you submit a video url and an optional email and name.

Hmmm so how do they get permission if you don't give them contact details.

I wonder what percentage of videos are actually submitted by the users and what percentage are stolen by staff from reddit.

Still damm good idea wish I'd thought of it myself.

thats a great question. im curious to it as well.

this is my belief: failblog is such a big hit that they operate outside of the TOS and youtube turns the blind eye because of how many views and subscribers they have. IF they go after failblog than there will be some negative repercussions against youtube .

I dont think any video owners know of failblog or know how to file a complaint against failblog due to stolen content/videos. I bet there are probably some complaints but not big enough to hurt failblog.

thats my 2 cents. great thread btw

I don't have time to dig into TOS right now but maybe there is a clause in there that uploaders agree that their videos can be used by others and if they don't want that they have to opt out for every single video or something.

    Like the books.

If you look at failblog videos, you can see that there are already several people who have posted the same video that failblog has - sans failblog logo. -- and sometimes with the failblog logo.

Imagine from youtube they make money as they are partners so have adverts before some of the videos.

Wonder which of these sites use grey areas to boost video views.

I did see a popular video channel once on a youtube view increaser site.

They make money from the YouTube revenue sharing program.

You could scrape videos manually using downloadHelper for Firefox.

There is probably a way to do it in a batch process as well. So all you'd need to do is get all of the FailBlog URLs.

Then, you could make a batch process to remove the last 4 second watermark, and replace it with your own.

e.g. someone who knew what they were doing, could basically clone the entire failblog channel in a few hours.

If you upload something on youtube then basically you share it to the public so - I guess there are isn't really "owners" of videos, yeah big companies can get your video removed but everyday users not really. So I guess they just abuse this.

    Thats the thing

Youtube doesn't care much about what you post...

UNTIL, you apply for the revenue sharing program.

At that point, there seems to be a human review process.

Supposedly the YouTube employees are supposed to look for "unique and original content" and they have all these rules about you "owning the video" etc.

But obviously, it appears that FailBlog breaks both of these rules.

Yet they are aloud to exist so.....

    I dont know...

of course youtube allows this.. its like them banning shanedawson (or whatever) for using stolen images etc... failblog just makes them too much money for that to happen.

its interesting that the upload page contains no legal copy that i can see

    http://failblog.org/fail-submissions/

But ya, failblog is the "channel" on YouTube.

From what i understand, entry into the revenue program is on a per channel basis.

Would you monetize it using Youtube or something else? I suspect Youtube would not let you monetize it if you are copying failblog.
