Ordered to pay $700 million! I somehow don't think those 27millions emails he sent will have made him enough bank to cover this one.

I don't understand why people like this can't disappear into bizarre countries and never be heard from again. Do they get off on it or something? Unless he wasn't monetizing it very well and didn't make a decent profit. You can buy a new identity for like $20,000 I guess.

He compromised other peoples account and used them to send the messages. You can't send millions of PMs from 1 account.

Don't think he'll have enough. 27 million facebook messages is quite the amount but still if it's untargeted, don't think he'll be monitizing...

The thing is, when it comes from a friend, you are 1000X more trusting then if it comes from a stranger. So if he PM's an entire friends list to send text message to 747474 and he makes even a bare minimum of $2.00 per conversion, he should be making bank.

Even at 1% conversion which is fair because its coming from a friend, he should make $500k. But that would have to be smart of him. I guess you are right that he probably wasn't monetizing very well and only made like 50k from email submits so he is screwed.

I dont understand where the judge came up with the figure of 700 million for this crime. Each message is worth $25.00? Get real.

Yeah, well... how many offline people do you know that understand the online business. FB has plenty of resources and money to get some good lawyers and position the potential losses as being 700 million.
Trying to set an example I suppose...

Why can people be sued for crazy amounts in the United States? The most it should be is $150,000.

Now that I think more about it, I think I understand where they got the total amount from.

In the United States they do a "Per Offense" judgement. In this case, I would have to say they based the judgement on each account he breached, and it was probably like $10,000 per offense or something.

I'm not sure if all countries do this or not, but it just makes things look like a joke. It is like when they sentence people to 9,000 years in prison. It would just make so much more sense if they judged his crime/punishment as a whole.
