After 4 years off IM, I'm coming back with a brand new account which is why I'll call this journey, the Phoenix Journey.
I had a fairly good experience in social medias, made some solid money back in the days and would like to get back to this as this was probably one of the funniest thing I did.

To make it quick, I quitted IM after founding my first company which got successful pretty fast. I sold it after a couple years while I was working on an other company that's been successful too and which I sold a couple months ago. While it's been an amazing experience on the human side as well as on the financial one, I always looked back at IM which felt more like freedom.

So now that I have more time in my hands, it's time to come back !

I hesitated a lot to write down my journey, but after long thoughts, I think it can help others to see how I start back and that it can also help me to have your feedback !

WARNING: even if I was able to get some crazy traffic 4 years ago, a lot of things have changed, so don't expect me to be an expert.

So here is the plan to get started again:

    PRODUCT

I'm going to start with a viral blog (like viralnova, buzzfil and co). I think that it should be easy to get some trafic through this kind of content and should be fun to see how far it can go. I know there is a lot of competition but we'll see, and I have some budget to spend (and lose).

    GOAL
I'd like to reach $10k monthly revenue within ~6 months.
To my estimates, this is reachable with the following conditions:
    • $1.5 CPM
    • ~250k Page Fans (Real, engaged and quality ones)
    • 2.5 page views per visits on average
    • 5 posts per day
    • 7% of the fan base engaged per day
    • Let's do the math: 1.5*((250000 * 0,07)*(5*30)*2.5)/1000 = $9843,75

My two main concerns with this scenario are:
    • I'll not be able to maintain this CPM
    • I'll not be able to reach 250k quality fans within 6 months

    PLAN

I have no big plan as I honestly have no idea how I'll grow this project. I have a method that almost always worked for me and that I will follow which is: start small, never give up, go big.
I'll start every week by analyzing what worked and what did not. From there, I'll try to learn as many lessons as possible and will then fix goals for next weeks.

So here is the plan for week 1:

    - Setup a blog
    - Post a few articles
    - Buy ads on fcbk and outbrn
    - Look at the first results

The goal is really not to make money off the first week, I'm not going to put ads on my website, I just want to see how it works today, how I will target audiences etc...
Basically, I'm going to be dumb, lose money, and will just try to get data and insights out of this.

    CONCLUSION

No need for more intro, let's start playing ;)
Oh also, I'll try to post complete recaps once a week so don't expect daily recaps.
I'll try to answer to your questions, remarks, advices etc.. daily though !

Great thread, the fact that you wrote $1.5 CPM and 7% reach means you know what's up, if you have a bit of talent for writing good image-heavy articles and creating good titles + you have some budget for testing, I don't see a reason this wouldn't be successful :)

There's definitely still room for such sites, especially if you niche down a bit, or have a bit of a unique angle. As a famous quote states, an idea needs to be 10% new to make a billion dollars.

Definitely subscribed, can't wait to see some numbers from the fb/ob campaigns.

Your first hurdle would be 250 k real and engaged fanpage audience.

How are you going to monetize your blog? Adsense with native ads?

So, I cheated a little bit, and actually, it's been almost a week since I started :p

So here is the first recap in 3 parts:

    1. What I did
    2. What I learned
    3. What I'll do

    WHAT I DID

So, first week started on Tuesday Night when I finally decided to take the jump.

I started by getting a server and installing Wordpress.

I bought a theme that look like it would fit my needs:
    • Made for simple content (pictures, videos...)
    • Made for pushing the user to share content

I then setuped a FB page and created some visuals for the header picture as well as the profile picture.

Within one week I have posted 5 articles (1/day). I mostly focused on the facebook campaigns.

Talking about this, I promoted each posts and also have a campaign that runs everyday with a $5 budget / day.

I tried to target users that would fit the theme of the articles. Article about a sexy girl: dudes, Article about cute stuff: girls.

For now, I targeted people between 18 and 25 in the US and UK, I'll probably keep doing this for now although I may run different tests on this later.

For the outbrn campaign, I did it really simply: target people in the US or UK, basic headlines with default pictures, $0,03 CPC (which is the minimum), $10 daily budget. That's it.

    Here come the figures:

    Traffic

    526 users
    549 sessions
    1973 pageviews
    3,59 pages/session
    32% bounce rate

Most of the traffic is from FB.
    Only 30 visits from OutBrn.
Also around ~40 visits from apparent referral spam.

    Facebook

    Page Likes: 51
    Post Likes: 99
    Post Shares: 24

    Money Spent

    OutBrn: $1
    Facebook: $74

    WHAT I LEARNED

    Content and Engagement on Facebook

During the week I posted articles targeted to Girls or Men. My Facebook campaigns where pretty simple (~$7/campaign) but there are some REALLY interesting things getting out of it:

Boobs = Clicks but Boobs != Engagement

One of my article was one about a sexy instagram girl, I wanted to see if it would be accepted on FB (the girl is always dressed but lightly ;)) and how it would perform. To no surprise, clicks were cheap ($0.02) but I got no shares or likes, NOT A SINGLE ONE. All in all, I don't really think it's super interesting to promote this kind of content due to the extremely low engagement rate. It's interesting to get cheap clicks though.

    Girls share more than guys

I got some way better results with cute/love content than with content for guys.

To give you an idea, I got a pretty exclusive car video, I spent some good budget as I was getting $0.0002 per view and wanted to see how big this could go. At the end, while I got a lot of views, I only got 81 shares/likes for 50k views (140k people reached) which is a 0.1% engagement rate. It seems really low.

With an other post about love, I reached 2874 and got 35 likes, which is a 1.2% engagement rate which is better. And it gets even better when I do the math only based on the number of people who came on the website ! 85 views of the article, which is then a 41% engagement rate !!! Not bad at all !

I think I'll target girls in the future now :D

Page Likes are EXPENSIVE AS F

Sooooo, this is probably the biggest fail of this week. I have a campaign that runs everyday with a $5 budget just to get likes on the page and HOLY SHT IT'S EXPENSIVE !!! I had $0,6/like at the beginning of the week, changed the profile and headline pictures and got $0,5/like. The thing is that there is not much you can do to improve this so I'm kind of lost about this. I'll probably keep it running but I'll have to find an alternative. 250k fans at $0,5; NOPE.

    My theme sucks

So this is an internal problem with me, I'm never satisfied of a WP theme if I didn't do it myself. I feel like I have no control with it. I'll keep it a little bit but I'll probably code my own soon.

    Outbrn

$0,03/click doesn't get you ANY traffic, 30 clicks in a week ...., I'll raise the CPC this week to see if I get more traffic.

So this is pretty much what I learned this week, I'll try to write down daily what I learn this week to be sure not to forget anything.

    WHAT I'LL DO

As you may have guess, I'll focus on posting girly content as it seems to have more success. Maybe I'm wrong on this as the volume was not huge, but at least, I'll have more data by the end of the week.

    My goals are:

Reach 120 likes on the page.
    Post 10 articles
Reach 200 engagements on my posts (though one I think)
Spend no more than $70 to reach these goals.

    CONCLUSION

Pretty interesting week, not crazy results but promising though !
Still no ads on my website, it's not interesting to have a new number to track as of today. Especially since I don't have huge traffic.
If you have any suggestion, feel free, I'll take any kind of help ;)

PS: I'd like to add images to this journey, does anybody know when I'll be able to do so ? I don't seem to have the rights with my new account

When I'll start monetizing, probably Adsense to measure stats. I may also quickly try ads like outbrn, tboola and co.

Then, as soon as I get more traffic, CPM adnetworks and native ads.

I never had much chance with CPA and I don't think there is real money to make with CPA and this kind of traffic.

Quick update just to say that I'm losing a lot of time due to a problem with my host.
I can't post anything, so I paused everything and am spending most of my time to solve this -__-

Good luck on your journey! Also, in a similar kind of journey myself. FB cost per page like always seems to get cheaper the longer you run your campaign, but $0.5 is pretty ridiculous. I started off at about .15 and now it's down to 0.08 after about a week. Any other ideas on how you're going to get to 250K? Keep the results coming. Insta-Bookmarked this thread after reading the first paragraph.

I'm trying a very similar niche as well but more focused on the local audience within my country.
The toughest part has been increasing fan base and engagement on Facebook using legitimate ways.

But if that's easy everyone would have a successful website.
Trying to improve the situation slowly - been about 7 months now and just crossed the 4K mark.

    Hey everyone,

I hope you guys are doing well!

Sadly this week report will be short as it's been really complicated to do anything :/.

    WHAT I DID

I started the week pretty slowly with a few article that did not really caught up, my assumption from last weeks about girls was probably a bit off.

Then, my website got REALLY slow for no apparent reason. I tried a lot of things without success and then turned to my host. The problem was from my host who hasn't been able to solve the problem within 24h (talk about 99.9% SLA....) so I decided to change my host.

I found a new one who seems really reliable and I have no problem since the migration. I lost an additional 24h during the migration of the domain.

With this time, I worked on my theme which is now waay better than before.

In the end of the week, an article (image gallery) got me some really interesting stats, I got ~1000 page views for only 90 unique visitors. That really isn't bad ! If I keep up with this kind of traffic and get good relationships with CPM networks, I might make some good money pretty quickly. Calc: 90 clicks at $0,02 = $1,8, I "just" need to get a $2CPM to make money and that's without counting non paid traffic.

    WHAT I LEARNED

That a host that used to be reliable a few years ago isn't anymore.

That image galleries can get you some really good page views if you have the right traffic and content.

    WHAT I'LL DO

I'm going to work mainly on getting new likes. As this is a long term thing, I'm really don't want to get fake likes so I'll focus on lowering my like acquisition price on FB which is alarming ATM ($0.5 per likes :help:). Also, I'll try to find some good content sources and see if I can automate a few things.

So this week, only one goal:

    - Lower the price per like to less than $0.15

I have a few good ideas that I need to test out.

Wish me good luck and as always, feel free to give advices !!!

I want the first likes to be real so that Facebook identifies my page as a trusty one. Then, I'll let virality do it's job and hey... I still have a few tricks in my pockets, but I need more volume ;)

viral blog + FB traffic (organic and paid) is definitely a still-viable method to make some amazing money. I'm currently doing the same thing and I'm on track to make $10K profit this month myself. Best of luck OP. I have some ideas I'm willing to trade with you. If you're up for it let's chat over PM.
