Facebook Spammers May Make $200M a Year

Everybody's seen them: those annoying links on Facebook fan pages promising a free iPad, access to a lurid celebrity sex tape or "breaking news" about how Facebook is going to begin charging users.

These spam links are often brushed off by intelligent web users, though a team of Italian researchers recently performed a calculation that found that these spam links may be bigger business than anyone thought. The team, after researching hundreds of thousands of Facebook pages, has determined that these links may be making $200 million a year for their creators.

"The spam posters get paid an average of $13. per post, for pages that have around 30,000 fans, up to an average of $58. to post on pages with more than 100,000 fans," said one of the leaders of the research, Carlos De Micheli.

"If we consider these two as extremes, the pages we analyzed generate a revenue of 18,000 posts per day, times the revenue per post - ranging from $13 to $58 - 365 days a year."

A perpetrator of Facebook spam even spoke to the Italian researchers, defending his or her actions by saying that they generate content for Facebook and are thus not banned. However, the researchers responded strongly, saying that the only purpose of these links is monetary gain.

"For people involved in this business the sole reason to continue is for the profit," they wrote. "We even found somebody who was selling a page dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Boston terrorist attack for US$1,000."

    seems waaay too high
it also depends on how you define spammer if that include scammers using facebook ads to push snakeoil or viral pages, viral apps
i would estimate its probably no more than $10 million with all the new fb heightened security

This is complete bullshit, I pay $0.05 per post.... "The spam posters get paid an average of $13. per post, for pages that have around 30,000 fans, up to an average of $58. to post on pages with more than 100,000 fans," said one of the leaders of the research, Carlos De Micheli.

    kegnum,
Do you mean posts by page's admin, or posts by third person on page wall?
And where do you get them?
    Thanks

And where is the problem with this???
Why should Facebook earn money and us shouldn't make some money???
Anyway, beside this the amount that may be made per year is over exaggerated and it is not true at all.

200M is way off, I'd say not even close to a third of the figure given.
