Quick heads up. I have been running a very limited and small promoted post campaign on Facebook for the last few weeks to just see if it works at all. I wasn't expecting to make a profit or anything, so I put a tiny bit of cash in just to see what would happen, more curious than anything else. To cut a loing story short, I set a promoted post up with a budget of 12 Euro. My page has 3k of fans. Anyway, first week I reached 18k people. The next week 11 k people, now this week just over 2k people. WTF, thats even less people than the page has fans. I know its not a lot of money, but it's the principle of the thing. Bad enough they now charge for reaching your fans, but it seems that the total reach per $ is getting less and less each week. If anyone is contemplating putting any real money into a promoted post, don't do it.

I think it's time to move to Pintrest. Rant over.

A lot of people are very unhappy with the Facebook changes and sponsored stories. A lot of big companies are expressing their disapproval of these changes.

My normal posts on my biggest page currently reaches about 95% of all the fans on my page so I'm pretty happy. It is an unbelievably active page though.

But shouldn't it reach more if you check the option to reach your fans and there friends?

Are you posting at the correct time for where your fans come from? for example are you posting when most of your fans are sleeping or at work/school?

Agreed. Their EdgeRank is a nightmare to deal with. One of the pages I manage has 100k+ fans - get the timing wrong, the post type or the comment wrong and it'll be lucky to naturally reach 4k of the 100k. When I'm willing to pay, however, it's very easy to hit the 100k mark. Utter brutality, but well within their rights now that we've all helped them build the platform.
