So some hipster IT companies have agreed to remove illegal hate speech which includes not only promoting violence but promoting hatred as well. Im not sure this applies to just stuff posted by people in the EU or the world in general but based on their hipster owners previous actions its probably worldwide.

Just saw this. I wonder if anti-"refugee" posts are classified as hate speech? Something tells me they certainly are.

Though I may not agree with most posts that will be eventually be deemed as hate speech, I detest these type of actions as mass censorship programs are an even greater threat to humanity and freedom than one persons words or opinions may be.

My question would be, who decides what is hate speech? And is this censorship determined by an individual predisposed to specific view points and if so, how do they ensure a reviewers censoring is not based on their own whims?

Maybe going the "Illegal Hate Speech" tagline is just a way to get more attention to article compared to just inciting violence being banned being used in the articles.

    From the Article:

The definition of hate speech covered by the code of conduct is narrow: it is defined in the document as “all conduct publicly inciting to violence or hatred directed against a group of persons or a member of such a group defined by reference to race, colour, religion, descent or national or ethnic origin”.

That ban is counterbalanced by the right to freedom of expression, which, the code highlights, covers “not only… ‘information’ or ‘ideas’ that are favourably received or regarded as inoffensive or as a matter of indifference, but also to those that offend, shock or disturb the state or any sector of the population”.

When i got summat to say (that could possibly be seen as hateful) i don't say it on Facebook etc anyway.

Besides, those of us who earn a living online rarely have the time to chat bollox on social media.

Suppressing the opinion and free speech of the majority of the European citizens is fundamentally wrong move, the world history proves that this kind of restrictions never succeed in the long run. Who are they to tell me that I have to accept anybody for my countryman?

I've seen deleted post on FB year ago, so they are doing it quietly anyway. But this does not change people's feeling and opinion about certain matters, does it?

Its not just "chatting" which would be censored also niches that cater to racists, bigots, xenophobes are going to be blocked from using social media in europe now.

A free speech social network is probably best way to adapt.

They aren't taking over its just that the SJW mindset is becoming more popular, which makes it even more fun for someone to strive for and to become a Titan of Industry and start telling governments how its going to be instead of bowing down and agreeing to something.

Exactly my thoughts. All this "hate speech" shit is just thought policing. It's a group of idiots telling us we can't think for ourselves. Telling you which one of your words... in what context... at what time... will somehow cause or "incite" someone else to be hateful or violent. And they say the definition is "narrow" but don't even distinguish between hate and violence? WTF. Hate is a thought or unquantifiable feeling. There's nothing "narrow" about it. Violence is a specific act. That's what you punish.

Its one of the things I hate about European hosting providers, they aren't clear on what the definition of hate is in their ToS when they say they don't allow hate speech. In the US its easy since hate speech is just speech that is directly inciting violence.

I don't care. I only promote on twitter love with every one: with redhairs, with asian girls, with men, with furrry, with tied babes, ...

Love promotion is the only thing which matters.

Well hate speech laws exist and this is essentially a way of policing it online. There are plenty of places for serious discussion of the issues in the world and in particular Europe (in this case) that really don't have to resort to xenophobic hate speech. Most of the platforms are open for voicing opinion and discussion but there should be a clear line drawn when someone is being outright racist. As far as distinguishing between hate and inciting violence, violence is a given. The article does specifically quote it stating “all conduct publicly inciting to violence or hatred directed against a group of persons or a member of such a group defined by reference to race, colour, religion, descent or national or ethnic origin”. I don't really see the issue here and I really think it's being blown out of proportion. It's the difference between saying "I hate muslims" or "I hate Islam". They're two radically different stances to have.
