I'm reading a lot about how to get them but still having an issue determining what the value of this really is, or what types of sites it would most benefit. Any additional clarification or insight would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

EDU backlinks are considered authority sites. So having your link on an EDU site is worth more than a regular site.

    1) .edus are considered quality because they are restricted to universities and you have to apply specially and go through a long approval process to get them. They're natural candidates for authority status.
    2) they're generally non-commercial and have a high editorial level (ie. spam generally gets removed quickly => they are naturally "trusted").
    3) they naturally acquire vast amounts of links from other authority sites eg. high impact scientific journals, newspapers, wikipedia, government sites, other universities etc.
    4) most .edus are very old (10-15+ years) which gives them the aged domain advantage as well. For example, princeton.edu was first activated in 1987.

I am starting a program working with veterans in college so I hope to gather some legitimately, but maybe good to have a couple starting off prior...

don't get too excited by .edu's from Wiki's though - they're not as good as what people selling them would have you beleive.

EDU are respectable sites to the Google eyes', so if your site has a backlink from it, it means is a good site.
