This may be a tired subject, but I am curious about what you think? I was looking at expired domains with some PR for my private blog network and noticed that there are domains that have zero back links and a nice page rank? I have checked the PR with several different tools and it is verified as PR 4-5. I know that there is talk of Google basing this on things like the quality of the content, design and ya ya ya. But, seriously does anyone have any opinions on the subject or why?

    Thanks-

My first question would be is what resource you used to check backlinks? If it was ahrefs or majestic, then I would say something is fishy with the PR. If not, I would try those tools.

Also go to Google and enter info:expireddomain.com (or whatever is the name of the site)

Make sure the results show the name of your site.

Also, what is the DA? If the site is a PR 4 or 5 I would expect to have a DA of at least 35

I was under the impression that PR was based almost entirely off of backlinks so I would think that was impossible. I would like to know more about this as well.

Scroogle doesn't update the PR everyday you know.

It's either a fake pr from a 301 or someone shot some pr links at it before the last pr update and then removed them ;)

Probably promotion was powered by sape links or 301 redirect and they just was removed as soon as domain expired or get penalized, promotion does not drop imideatly as well like G does not updated PR every day.

Check it through archive.org. Does it look a good legit site that would have picked that PR?

it's a 301 redirect, and to me, any domain with pr 5 and no backlink, is absolutely and totally "SEO scam", i prefer a blogspot to such domains, even for free.

Probably a fake one with a 301 redirect. You should check the link well before buying domains

Definitely reeks of a Fake PR. PR is based completely on the link profile of a domain. If you find no quality links to this domain, you can conclude that it is fake.

I also think that it's 301 redirect. But I'm curious, backlinks from such domains (with no backlinks but high pr) have any value in short term, before pr update?

0 backlinks and pr4-5 indicate fake pr gained from redirects.

It might have had a bunch of backlinks that were removed. Or it's being 301'ed. What did ahrefs say?

Moz, ahrefs, and majestic crawlers don't necessarily see all back links to a site (they can't physically search the whole web each time they do an update) - Moz is the worst and has the smallest data set, ahrefs and seomajestic are much better but even they are not perfect. Having said this however, I would think a PR4 domain should at least show some back links - I wouldn't risk buying this domain if I were you, especially when there are so many others that you can get that do show their backlnks.

Best to check and make sure it's not a 301..If you can verify it did have a website on it then it may be worth a buy. If you have enough other PR sites in your network you could probably keep the PR pretty high by the time there is another update..
