I found an expired domain with awesome ingoing links. Not completely sure since there seem to be a lot of spam links as well. When I entered the pages that was listed with spam links, I couldn't find them though, so maybe they have been removed. Anyway, I noticed in the way back machine that the domain has been used for a long time only as a redirect to another site. Is this a bad sign?

Maybe those links were removed by admin. Some host of sites have small capacity, so after few days admin will remove them. It makes their host lighter and their site run faster.

That makes sense, I'll grab it and test it out I think. But do you think it would be a problem that it has been used as a redirect previously?

it can be. but not necessary. First of all you need to check the domain stats on 5-6 different metrics. Moz, SemRush, Ahrefs, etc.
If most of the stts are good you are ok to go. But even if domain stats became lower than before you can try to make a list of top pages by semrush and make the same urls for your pages. After just watch for 2-3 weeks and make a decision about your domain.
