Im thinking of how to capitalize on this inner pages linkjuice in a good way. Its an old inner page of content that isnt relevant to the site as the site is in a narrow niche. Ive read on several threads on this forum and others that doing a 301 to homepage on all 404 is a very bad idea and can get site deindexed.

The inner page is currently indexed in google at an OK position but its a 404 currently. Do i need to restore the inner page with similar to its original content or can i do a selective 301 on it to the homepage?

I'd be careful with a general "catch all" 404 to 301 -> homepage, but if there aren't useful ways to rebuild and repurpose a page, a 301 -> homepage is totally fine. The only risk: Google sees it as a soft 404 and the juice is gone.

Rebuild the link and put there an article related to your niche and link back your homepage

Yeah, why not create a new page with relevant content to your new niche. With this you could either link back to homepage or sell from that page, perhaps even target a slight variation of your keyword.

Recreate the URLs, especially if it's within the same niche, it's not a big deal. 404 is not a catastrophe either, especially if you have backlinks spread out all over the inner pages. If 90%+ backlinks point to homepage, then don't bother. I personally do not believe that backlink power simply gets "lost" completely, just because particular page wasn't found on the domain.
