    Hi Hatters!
Hope someone can help me to understand what's happening with one of my website. I bought an expired domain with good metrics some time ago and then used it for one of my money website. Now after a month or so I've noticed that I had a drop in ranking in AHrefs. Do you think my domain got penalized for the new website? The niche was similar, but not 100% the same. Should I get another domain as this one is f@**ed? thanks!

How long ago did you do the site etc ?
It may just be a dance. Have any of the backlinks been removed / dropped, according to Ahrefs ?

I had the domain parked for 2 months, then used it for my new website since last month, I would say 30 - 35 days now. No backlinks have been removed/dropped

Did it drop in Google? Ahrefs may have been blocked or did not crawl your backlinks, only use ahrefs metrics for general guidance.

The drop is in the AHrefs ranking, the number went up two times comparing to before I published the new website. Other than that, everything seems alright

Ahrefs rank and rankings have very little in common. Ahrefs rank is like Alexa, some estimated position in the top 100 million domains. It doesn't say if you website ranks for the specific search terms you are targteting or not.

30 to 35 days is too short to conclude if the site is penalize or not. It could be dancing. If you are tracking any of the KWs on google, perhaps it will give you much better idea.

Don't use expired/auction domains for money sites...

This. Unless it's brandable and in your niche, using expired domain for a money site is bad

Well somebody says it's bad, somebody says it works, I guess it surely depends on the niche and testing is the only thing to do to know it

Ok, thanks.. this domain has good history (5+ years), TF over 10 and some good backlinks. I just want to know what are the pitfalls of that..

Forget about Ahrefs. Focus on keywords and track them. That's the best way to know if you're headed in the right direction.

If the site is down from the initial positions, don't worry. Focus on on-site and build links slowly. Don't forget about fresh content and that requires an active blog.

30-35 days is too short to take a call on anything. I suggest you give it a while and focus on the tactics above.

Absolutely no problem with using expired domains as money sites.

And Ahrefs rank means absolutely nothing. My morning shit number 3 means more than that. Track your keywords and take it from there. 30 days is also nothing. As somebody here said a while ago, your site is still covered in 53 layers of embryonic fluid. Track your keywords and see where you are at after a few months.

    Hey

I suggest that you wait for few more days... your money site might be fluctuating.

    Cheers,
    Steve

It might be just temporary fluctuations. Site is still running new, so it may take a little while to stabilize and capture all that's happening to your site.

@what_hat? It looks like the keywords are ranking good and the website has already some organic traffic, so I guess it's getting there. Ahrefs ranking still bad though, but not really sure it matters that much now
