Google is doing the opposite of what they say again
Expired domains that are purchased and repurposed with the intention of boosting the search ranking of low-quality content are now considered spam high quality backlinks.

Let me share something interesting I found.

I did kw research on loan related keywords in Finnish and I found that there is small website (oivalaina.fi) which ranks between 1 and 3 positions with the search terms "laina" and "lainaa" (in English: loan or loans). These are the two highest volume keywords in this niche.

The website has only a few pages with just a contact form and really low-word content which is not specially optimized for any keywords.

Ahrefs only shows 26 referring domains but DR 43. Some spam links, some quest posts etc. pretty normal backlink profile for small website. Only 2 backlinks with keyword as an anchor text.

Then I dug a little deeper and I found a huge expired domains network. They have hundreds or thousands expired domains that have been made into a private "domain park" network. Each website looks similar and contains links to 9 different affiliate sites as a reference. Another domain linked from the same domain park also ranks first with "payday loans" keyword.

Ahrefs and SEMrush can't find these but you can find most of these linking sites with a search term "Tämä domain on varattu. oivalaina.fi".

And this happened just after Google released the March core & spam algorithm update.

Conclusions:
- Links are still really strong ranking signals.
- Expired domains works now even better than quest posts for link building.
- ******** / nofollow ratio is almost 100%
- Almost all anchor texts contains website's name or domain. No keywords in anchors.

Very interesting will try this out and see If it will rank better.

Wonder if this is limited to cctld or non-English domains

Mostly English domains got penalty. I am not sure about other regions.

It is too early to draw any conclusions.

From what I see, the English versions of the sites are the first to be hit, so I guess everything else will follow.

Anyway, it's early.

This has more with link wheels & interlinking money sites that just expired domains,
Since the domains doesn't have as much authority per your mention,

And yes, there are people who has been doing this in several niches for a decade for some cases,
People fail to understand that it's an algorithm behind the scenes & spam will always have its way in SEO

Nobody knows the method Google applies. Also, you didn't mention that the domain itself was expired before used for this project. I think Google would only deindex if it's that domain.

I have an expired domain that never got deindexed but almost everything got deranked.

maybe it is just temporary. Update still ongoing.
yeah, during updates a lot of things change back and forth, I almost never trust these groundbreaking discoveries while the updates are being rolled out...

Also OP, try not to reveal other people's websites because you wouldn't want others doing the same to your sites and risk getting them deindexed, so don't do it to others!

This being said, great share, but I'll take it with a pinch of salt :)
