I've got a throwaway site that I've done nothing with, so I'm trying an experiment to see if I can rank it without leaving a huge link footprint. I was thinking that social media stuff might work...but I'm open to other ideas. Anyone tried this? I think it would be a valuable skill, especially for larger, corporate clients who don't really care about link reports, and who'd rather not let their comp know how they're ranking and what their anchors are. ;-)

Thanks given to all who contribute something and +Rep for the best answer.

Press releases and infographics are two strong white hat strategies that are working for me lately.

your social media direction is good, and in some cases you can rank a site on nothing more than that. press releases, guest posts, doc sharing and video sites could also be a strong whitehat combination

Thanks...any more ideas? I agree with press releases as well...had one site jump +290 places after just one release...has stuck for a couple weeks.

How do you use social to rank, for instance?

Good to hear this guys, and from a lot of people I respect on bhw. I still do the random (mini!) sb shot at T2-3's, but I wanted to get some confirmation. It strikes me that social is a nice tool, especially when working with high profile clients who wouldn't know a link report from a hole in the ground...they just want to see rank, traffic, and conversion. Actually, if you just provide the conversion, nothing else should matter. I think a lot of people get caught up in ranking #1 and forget that clients just want to make more money. I have a site that was actually bringing in more revenue at #3-4, than it is at #1...go figure.

You could have told me before I paid for a yearly with piktochart !

I'm sure everything gets overdone eventually but right now I can spit out a decent keyword targeted graphic in a few hours and the return is well worth it.

I have used Piktochart...straightforward interface and a nice excuse to use my right brain and get a bit creative. I think infographics have merit when used in the right place...I use them when I need to explain something complicated, which works well when submitting to places where people are more likely to look at images: Pinterest, Stumbleupon and Reddit.

Combination of local SEO & core SMM is a good way combination of building your rankings online, they help to put a big mark on search engines indexing getting you more traffic to your site.
