I recently launched a photography blog and since it's such a competitive niche, emailed a few owners of dead (not expired) site owners to see if they had any interest in selling. It just turns out I was able to buy a five-letter domain from the owner of a dead search engine. Thousands of links from authority sites (Techcrunch, TIME, universities, news sites, etc.). The domain was transferred to me and never expired.

My thought is that I can use this link power to rank for affiliate key terms, but is it possible Google devalued these links because they are all 3-6 years old? What steps can I take to maximize the value of these links.

Right now I am focusing on writing fresh content and building fresh links. I am ranking relatively well for a new site but nothing amazing.
