Exact match domain vs close match and sitemaps

    Just curious how much better it is to have less words and folders in a URL when trying to rank for a keyword.

    For example if I want to rank for blue widgets and my two Options for urls are

    1) subdomain.domain/blue-widgets

    2) subdomain.domain/folder/blue-widgets

    Is option 1 automatically more relevant than option 2, by how much?

    I'm asking with search engine spiders in mind and their ability to follow links on my site and crawl/ index all my pages. I don't really want to put a link to all the different "colors" of widgets on my home page but would be ok with a link to a "widgets" page and then to the different colors.

    Should I take the URL with less words and then clutter the homepage with links or should I have a slighter longer home page URL that links to a categories page
