So, have you ever recommended your SEO services to your day job?
If so what were your results? How did it go?

Im asking because I just started a killer job, and in just the past couple weeks I've been there I have heard the boss mention needing to have business pick back up, and needing to make more $$$ several times.

Needless to say I look at the company's website and it's a simple Wordpress site, not SEO optimized at all.

Seems like an opportunity to make some $$$

While the competition for his niche is med to high for all keywords according to Google KW Planner(Which I've never even attempted ANY high competition keywords) the traffic would be extremely targeted for his bizz. We only have 1 competitor in our area and it's not doing SEO either, other than having KW's in his metadata, its site only has 2 back links, so SEEMS easy enough. Kinda just rambling random info.

Keyword research and liking money have brought me to ask for BHW members input, always love to hear what my IM mastermind group has to say.

Since the business is small and local, I would say go for it. Who knows, if your boss sees that there is a noticeable difference in his business, he may give you a raise along with the money for his SEO campaign. :D

My day job is SEO, so it's kinda hard not to...

Regarding the competitiveness of the niche, you could aim your strategy at all those small hills and leave the mountains as the last step.

small hills = low comp long tail kw's
mountain = high comp short tail kw's

Competition in KWP relates to how many people are bidding on the keyword, and nothing else.

I think that you should prepare a small business plan - where you present to your boss the benefits of this kind of campaign, the costs and the return. All has to be simple and not technical to be understandable. In rest you should know that this can turn back to you - you can work for the SEO for your company that is already paying you a fee, maybe they'll forgot to pay you more :)

When I had a 9-5 and was first starting out in SEO, the way I recommended SEO to the boss was indirectly. I mentioned to him about an article I read that talked about how many clients could be gained through internet marketing in our specific niche, and then I asked what the company was doing to increase ranking on line. Every time I saw him I would talk about it, and soon after thats all he had me doing.

This is what I have done too, and I succeed in it. Not only I got my own division to work with, I also got some good raise and a good spending money for the division.
Just make sure that you can prove what you have promised. You promised X leads, then you must give them more than X leads. Also make sure that you really knows what you are doing, since your boss may also hire another SEO, who may or may not have better knowledge than you.

When I used to work 9 - 5 like Dolly Parton, personally I would not have wasted my time mentioning it to anyone above me. My IM / SEO skills are all for myself, you gain nothing out of a few brown points at your 9 - 5, but you have a lot to gain out of it by making yourself the main man. SEO / IM skills are too valuable to give away to people who look down their nose at you. (No offense by the way) this is just the way it is. If you are that confident at making your bosses company more successful, FK him, do it for you, no one else.

I`d think it is possible if you create a long client list of happy buyers who will also word of mouth generate more leads for you.

Why would you ever want to do that? Will your boss share profits 50/50 with you? Better ditch him and start your own business.

My suggestion is that you forget this completely, unless you already know or spend the time to learn about Local SEO. You tank this site, and you tank your job, and reputation and you might get sued.

I will tell you right up front if you are thinking backlinks are the way to rank this site, you are wrong.

Mind you, I am not telling you not to do it if you REALLY do get local SEO.

If you do not understand trust flow, domain authority, why not to build backlinks to a local business, what citations are and how to get them, how important citation consistency is, what to include in every single citation, on page SEO and I do not mean plugins here I mean real on page optimization). then you need to build your own site and rank it until you learn these things.

If you spent an hour on the keyword research and think you think you have it nailed down, you do not know what the hell you are doing. If you did not do any keyword research, and just came up with the keywords by using what you think are good words... I don't even know what to say.

It may look easy, and even be easy, to rank this site. But it is a hell of a lot easier to inadvertently screw up a site because you read too much and listen to the wrong people.

Tank this site, and you cost a man his income. They tend to get pissy about that.

On the other hand, if you do know all that information above (if you do you also know a lot of the stuff I left out), you should absolutely go for it, and you will have no problem at all ranking this site.

If you're not experienced enough; don't bother. You'll likely fuck up and end up getting fired. However, if you know what you're doing - then go for it. Just remember what'll happen if you don't deliver!
