I've ripped many free themes, changed colours and reuploaded them with my link in the footer.
Fuck, I've shared premium themes on here with my link in the footer.
It is worth it if you can submit your theme to wordpress.org theme inventory.
Classic way to get a manual link penalty.
Is it? What about the whole "powered by wordpress" thing?
The thing with that is that you have no control where your link will end up.
Malware pages, porn and other crazy places.
Not worth the hassle unless you have really good experience with this kind of linking.
If you are designer or developer though - then with a bit of research you can try your luck to get a nice backlink profile.
Sadly, google has deprecated this backlink generation method.
I think it would work - it would have to be used with a lot of other links I guess, to keep everything looking natural.
If you are going to all of this effort though why not a paid theme? Then you have the free links + you will generate an income from theme sales.
