Thanks is just a time saver; it's there so you can say "thanks" to someone without the thread getting cluttered up with dozens of "thanks for the share" posts. It's also a guage of how much you share on the forum.

Reputation is just a guage of how trustworthy or reputable you are on the forum. At least, that's what it's SUPPOSED to be. Reputation points aren't currently viewable to the public, we're debating whether to bring that back or not.
