Hi,

I know I know- There can DEF be made money on non-English speaking markets, but: What's the better choice for an a niche website?

Basically I've been going back and forth between creating a website in the female fitness/nutrition niche for the English-speaking market or for the German-speaking market. I'm fluent in both, so language barriers wouldn't be an issue (German family, both raised in Germany and the States).

Doing it for the German market probably has the huge advantage of having a lot less competition. But here comes the but- There's also a lot less people so a smaller potential audience, and keyword options are a lot more limited (couldn't find a lot of long-tail keywords that actually had more than a few hundred monthly searches), search volume is a lot lower. For the past months, I've tried to grow to female fitness Instagram accounts (mostly reposts and some infographics made by myself) to test the waters, and the English-speaking account has grown a lot faster. Also, American customers seem to be more into spontaneous purchases online while Germans seem to be a lot more careful. All this makes me think that maybe targeting the American/English-speaking market will be a lot more lucrative and filled with more options, but on the other hand I know that there is tons of competition and maybe my site would just get lost without ever getting any traffic.

What would your advice be? What market should I go for?

The one you have the most affection for which seems to be an English market. It doesn't matter that much, just start.

I'd go with English. The thing about English is that it's not only limited to Americans or Brits, but to pretty much anyone in the world.

My advice would be; why not both? (2 separate sites)

It's better to have 1% of 300M people than 10% of 30M? Nope - It's the same :)
I would go with English, just because I know the language.

Ask yourself what you would chose if you would have to stick to that decision for the next couple of years.
Answer that question really fast.
I think deep inside you will already have a preference.

I would choose English btw.

English speaking market has more consumers and $$$$ but also more competition. You can get a bigger piece of a smaller pie with a different language, although that may still be smaller than what you would make from an English site. Both are viable.
